Study: The U.S. Postal Service supports its parcel business at the expense of universal mail service
A new study finds that the “U-S Postal Service” has used its taxpayer-supported advantages in ways that are inconsistent with its mission to deliver the mail nationwide. Specifically, privileges that have been allotted for mail-service—such as tax-exemptions, Treasury-loans, and monopoly-access to mailboxes—have, instead, become resources for supporting the “Postal Service’s” parcel-business—in competition with private delivery-companies. Doctor Robert Shapiro is a co-author of the study—and the chairman of “Sonecon”… “Despite its commitment to universal, on-time mail-service, the ‘Postal Service’ has shifted its focus, resources, and operations away from its public mission—and towards its competition in the package-delivery market. Our study examines the growing dimension of this subsidized competition by a public enterprise—and how it impairs the quality of the mail-service [that] we all depend on. Congress can take commonsense measures to address these problems—by ensuring [that] the ‘Postal Service’ has the resources for universal, on-time mail-service—and by ending the use of taxpayer-subsidies for its competitive parcel-business.” To read the full report, visit “sonecon”-dot-com; that’s “s-o-n-e-c-o-n”-dot-com.
