On January 22, 1973, the landmark Supreme Court decision, Roe v. Wade, was issued. This decision legalized abortion across the United States, recognizing a woman's constitutional right to choose to have an abortion. The ruling established a woman's legal right to access abortion services, with certain restrictions based on the trimester of pregnancy.On January 22, 2024, we had as our Zoom lunch guests, Dr. Francesa Turner and Dr. Emily Boevers, two OB-GYN doctors practicing in Iowa, who know the reality of what it means to turn back the clock on the right woman have had for 50 years. Together, they formed a PAC, Iowans for Health Liberty, to educate and advocate for women’s healthcare rights in the political sphere. Also on the call was Mary Riche, who is assisting them in growing the PAC. I have patients who literally walk to our hospital with their five children in a snowstorm to get care because they don't have childcare, because they don't have transportation, and they can't afford the bus, said Dr. Francesca Turner* According to our guests, Iowa has the fewest OBGYNs per capita, lower than any other state nationwide. * States with abortion restrictions have a 16% increase in infant mortality. More babies will die if we have abortion restrictions. Infant mortality increased by 3% nationally. * But in Iowa, infant mortality increased by 30%, as of 2022.
