A strong earthquake struck northeastern Japan on Monday 20th April 2026, measuring up to upper 5, the fourth-highest level on the Japanese seismic intensity scale, and triggering tsunami warnings. The quake had an estimated magnitude of 7.7 and occurred at a depth of about 10 kilometres. A ‘Subsequent Earthquake Advisory’ has been issued so to be wary of aftershocks. This is the second time such an advisory has been issued.
