Sugar mill macheté

from Barbados Audio Diaries · host Richard Perry

Why did they keep a macheté nearby as sugar crane was crushed at the famous Morgan Lewis Sugar Mill? Tour guide Sherné Alleyne shares the gruesome story. The wind-driven machinery that ground the sugarcane in the 18th and 19th centuries is still intact, but it suffered serious damage during a freak storm in 2021. It is one of the only two intact and restored sugar mills in the Caribbean. The Barbados National Trust is fundraising to help restore the mill.
