English SummaryThe other day, my husband said to me at home: “You’re always on your phone.”It wasn’t said harshly. It was the kind of remark that slips out when the person beside you isn’t looking your way. What I was actually looking at was this Substack — editing a draft, or reading a comment someone had left me. But a phone screen is invisible from the outside. Playing a game, watching a video, writing an essay: the posture is identical. Head down, fingers moving. Seen that way, the remark was fair enough. What strikes me is that earlier the same day, I had been at my computer making slides for a training video for my husband’s workplace — and nobody said anything about that. Sitting at a computer looks like work. The same person, the same seriousness, the same purpose; change the tool and the meaning changes.I didn’t explain myself. I could have said “I’m writing an article” or “I’m replying to a reader,” but I didn’t. Saying the word “Substack” would have meant starting from what Substack even is, and “I’m writing” would have invited “what for?” — a question I still can’t answer neatly. At home, what I do has no name. Work has a name. Housework has a name. But editing sentences on a phone late in the evening doesn’t. So it becomes “your phone.” That isn’t a complaint. Things without names get called by the shape people can see.I don’t think this is only my story. Most people who start learning something new spend a long stretch of time doing things they can’t explain to anyone: looking something up on the commute, watching one video at lunch, moving their hands a little before bed. From the outside, all of it is just “the phone.” Only the person doing it knows something is quietly shifting.Learning again doesn’t begin once people understand it. It begins without explanation, and continues without explanation. If you wait to be understood before you move, you may never move at all. You can hand over the result when there is a result. That’s what happened with my husband’s video: showing him the half-built screen would have meant nothing, but handing him the finished thing landed perfectly well. The middle part doesn’t need to be visible. So today I’m going to let myself off the hook for not answering back. I didn’t stay quiet because I’d given up. I stayed quiet because it isn’t finished yet.If you’re quietly keeping something going that you can’t tell anyone about — it simply doesn’t have a name yet. Keep going, and the name will catch up with you later. You don’t have to explain all of it at once. Today’s portion is enough. This is a public episode.
