Geboren 1944 in Atlanta, Georgia, entdeckte Gladys Knight ihre Liebe zur Musik schon als kleines Mädchen, im Gospel-Chor der Kirche.1952, bei der Geburtstags-Feier ihres Bruders: ein kaputter Plattenspieler, fünf singende Kinder, und eine spontane Performance, die alles ins Rollen brachte. Der Spaß wurde schnell ernst: gemeinsam mit Bruder Bubba, Schwester Brenda und zwei Cousins gründete sie eine Gesangsgruppe. Man nannte sich „The Pips“, nach einem Cousin mit Spitznamen “Pip”.
