Supreme Court to Decide on Trump Admin's Acting Prosecutor Move | Las Vegas News

The Trump administration is taking Sigal Chattah’s controversial appointment as Nevada’s top federal prosecutor all the way to the Supreme Court, challenging a federal appeals court ruling that declared her interim role illegal. The core of their argument centers on longstanding executive practice: filling vacancies during presidential transitions with acting appointees to maintain continuity — even if Senate confirmation is pending. Chattah, initially appointed as first assistant U.S. attorney and later reappointed under a new title after resigning, became the focal point when public defenders challenged her authority. The appellate court, including a judge appointed by Trump, questioned whether the Attorney General can legally bypass Senate approval through such interim appointments. Now, the administration seeks Supreme Court review while a permanent Nevada U.S. Attorney nomination remains stalled in the Senate — turning a bureaucratic dispute into a high-stakes legal showdown.
