Surfin' Rat

from Ken Minty · host Ken Minty

The lyrics to this song are a variation on those in The Riverton's “Papa Oom Mow Mow” released in 1962, and used most famously by The Trashmen in “Surfin' Bird” in 1963. These nonsense words create a deep and compelling rhythm which I felt would be very appropriate to this track - which is really about comparing a heavy 4:4 rock beat to an equally heavy 5:4 rock beat. While classical, traditional and jazz based music are quite comfortable with eccentric rhythms, Rock has not been so (with a few notable exceptions, such as Pink Floyd's “Money”). I wrote this song to try to figure out why. I still don't know why, but here is the song. The cover art is an Image by Iván Tamás from Pixabay
