Welcome to The Lid from the Press. I'm Carrie Dan. Okay, guys, I couldn't help it. I saw this new survey today, and because of it, this song has been stuck in my head ever since.

You're as cold as ice. You're willing to sacrifice our love. Cold as ice. That is how the two political parties feel about each other, literally.

That's according to a new survey from the Pew Research Center, which finds that, no, you're not crazy. Things out there are really getting worse. Folks just really, really don't like each other when it comes to being on opposite sides of the aisle. Here's what Pew did and has done since 2016.

They asked people to rate their feelings for the Republican and Democratic parties on a scale from 0 to 100, with 0 being the, quote, coldest rating. And get this, about 8 out of 10 Republicans and Democrats give the other party a cold rating, and for 6 out of 10, it is very cold. Those numbers are all up by about 20 percentage points since March of 2016 before the presidential election. That is cold.

And we ain't just talking just about politics. The survey also asks this question. Do you think that, though they feel differently about politics, members of the other party probably share many of your goals and values? Or do they not share them?

And again, about 6 out of 10 Democrats and 6 out of 10 Republicans say the other party just doesn't share their values and goals. Republicans seem to have particularly strong feelings about this when it comes to specific traits. Majorities of Republicans say that Democrats are more close-minded, more immoral, and more unpatriotic than other Americans. A majority of Democrats say Republicans are close-minded, and about half say they're more immoral.

I guess the good news is that only about 4 in 10 Republicans and Democrats actually say people in the other party are actively more unintelligent than other Americans, and slightly less than half of Republicans say Democrats are lazy. It's just 20% the other way around, but that is all pretty grim. Okay, I feel bad because this podcast is so negative, and you don't deserve to have those piano chords from the 70s and 80s band foreigner stuck in your head all day like me. So let's close out with something else that a lot of folks around here are humming today.
