Susan Wright: The Blue-Eyed Butcher

from Hitched 2 Homicide · host Kris Calvert and Rob Pottorf

On January 13, 2003, Susan Wright killed her husband, Jeff Wright, inside their Houston, Texas, home. What happened in their bedroom would become one of the most sensational murder cases in Texas true crime. Susan admitted that she stabbed Jeff 193 times. Afterward, she buried his body in a shallow grave in the family’s backyard and attempted to conceal what she had done. But when the truth came out, Susan claimed she had acted in self-defense after years of physical and emotional abuse. Prosecutors told a very different story. They argued Susan had deliberately lured Jeff into bed, restrained him, and attacked him with a knife. During her 2004 trial, prosecutor Kelly Siegler used the actual bed from the Wright home in a dramatic courtroom demonstration, straddling a fellow prosecutor to show jurors how the state believed Susan carried out the killing. The jury rejected Susan’s claim of self-defense and convicted her of murder. She was initially sentenced to 25 years in prison. After an appeals court determined that her defense attorney had failed to adequately present evidence relating to battered woman syndrome during sentencing, Susan received a new punishment hearing in 2010, and her sentence was reduced to 20 years. Susan was granted parole in 2020 and walked out of prison on December 30 of that year after serving more than sixteen years. The case inspired the Lifetime movie Blue-Eyed Butcher, a nickname that has remained closely associated with Susan Wright and the extraordinary brutality of Jeff’s death. This is the true crime story of Susan Wright—a troubled marriage, 193 stab wounds, a body buried in the backyard, and a courtroom battle over one question that divided everyone who followed the case: Was Susan Wright a battered wife fighting for her life—or a woman who planned the murder of her husband?
