Suspense: My Dear Niece (Dame Mae Whitty, Wally Maher) (01-24-1945)

This episode is a suspenseful noir-style mystery about a lonely widow, Mrs. Emily Rogers, who answers a mysterious job ad and is pulled into a deadly scheme involving a fake employer, a murdered man, and a criminal hiding in plain sight. The tension works because it starts with an ordinary problem, then steadily turns every small detail into a threat, keeping you guessing until the final reveal. In short: Mrs. Rogers takes a strange work-from-home job, is told to shelter a writer named Paul Stevens, and then discovers that “Paul Stevens” is actually a fugitive and that the charming Mr. Bruce behind the job is part of a murder plot. She narrowly survives long enough for the police to close in, and the ending reveals the whole setup was tied to her niece Mary’s husband and a hidden connection the aunt never knew about.
