Odczuwa wielkie pragnienie działalności dobroczynnej. Spotyka ks. Alojzego Liberę, który staje się jej kierownikiem duchowym. Przez siedem lat towarzyszy jej w drodze rozeznania duchowego swojego powołania. W 1799 spotyka ks. Andreę Avogadro, późniejszego biskupa Werony i przedstawia swój plan działania na polu dobroczynności. Nie zostaje on jednak wzięty pod uwagę. Magdalena bardzo przeżywa ten zawód, ale z powodu kłopotów rodzinnych musi się zająć administracją dóbr rodowych, włączając w to Palazzo Canossa. Mimo to podejmuje dzieło, do którego czuje się wezwana, a mianowicie opiekuje się osieroconymi i porzuconymi dziewczętami i odwiedza chorych w szpitalach.
