Syracuse Bolts Secondary with Averett
from Syracuse Orange Football Today | 2 Min News | The Daily News Now!
Syracuse University is making a bold move to overhaul its defense by bringing in former NFL star Anthony Averett, who’s now 31 and returning to college football as a recruiting staffer. Averett, a two-time national champion from Alabama, played five seasons in the pros with the Ravens and Raiders, starting 27 of 51 games and helping win a division title. His experience in the secondary is exactly what Syracuse needs as they beef up their coaching staff with new defensive coordinator Vince Kehres and key defensive backs coaches Perry Eliano, Marcus Walker, and Brandon Napoleon — while head coach Fran Brown also takes charge of cornerbacks. The Orange are also loaded with talent, including top draft prospect Chris Peal and freshman standout Demetres Samuel Jr., who was a semifinalist for the Shaun Alexander Award. With a pass defense ranked 120th last season and a tough ACC schedule ahead, Syracuse is clearly betting big on building a dominant secondary for the future.
