Yo crecí en el típico Shita-machi, que es el término japonés utilizado para el área obrera en el este de Tokyo, la misma zona en la que creció la gente de la Yakuza (una mafia japonesa). Casi nunca hablaba con mi padre. Cuando yo y mis hermanos oíamos sus pasos, salíamos corriendo y nos escondíamos. Creo que era miembro de la Yakuza, aunque, para mantener a su familia, se veía forzado a trabajar como pintor.
