Taking the Lead 76: Scott A. Bundy, MD, FACR | The Ownership Mentality: How Leaders Are Made and Practices Are Built

from RLI Taking the Lead Podcast · host Radiology Leadership Institute

In this episode of the RLI’s Taking the Lead, host Geoffrey Rubin, MD, MBA, FACR sits down with Scott Bundy, MD, FACR, CEO and Chair of Strategic Radiology, to explore the defining principle that has shaped his career - an ownership mentality. From his early days growing up in the Midwest where baseball, hard work, and team dynamics were foundational to his career in private practice, Dr. Bundy shares how taking ownership of problems, opportunities, and outcomes became the cornerstone of his leadership approach. He reflects on how those early lessons carried through to helping build one of the largest independent radiology organizations in the country, navigating complex mergers, and leading through uncertainty in a rapidly evolving healthcare environment. Dr. Bundy also offers a candid perspective on how leaders are developed over time, not born, and why communication, transparency, and engagement are essential to earning trust and driving change. The conversation explores the formation and evolution of Strategic Radiology, highlighting how collaboration and shared purpose can create both scale and independence. He closes with practical advice for the next generation of radiologists: embrace responsibility early, learn from mistakes, and take ownership not just of your work, but of the future you want to build. Behind the Mic Dr. Bundy and his wife, Tracy, just celebrated their 30-year anniversary on June 1. They reside in Highland Park, Texas, a Dallas suburb, and have 2 daughters. The eldest daughter, Briar, recently graduated cum laude from the University of Georgia and will be attending law school at American University in Washington DC in the fall. The younger daughter, Berkeley, is a rising Junior at Washington and Lee University studying accounting and finance. Berkeley is also a scholar athlete. She is a member of the W & L women’s golf team which just finished 4th at the NCAA Division III golf championship. Berkeley was also named first team all-conference participating in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference and was named to the NCAA all-Southeast Regional Team.   When schedules permit, the Bundy clan enjoys traveling as a family and exploring diverse cultures with unique experiences. As a family, they have visited 5 continents and nearly 50 countries, occasionally making time for golf or snow skiing. Whether learning how to make sushi at the Tokyo fish market, visiting concentration camps in central Europe, rug making in Tunisia, or playing golf at the “world’s most dangerous course” alongside the Korean DMZ, there is no better way to understand a culture than to learn their history and immerse oneself in their local traditions and way of life.
