from People's Church · host Herbert Cooper

08-19-18 - Sticks and Stones - Talk Is Cheap? - Herbert Cooper Proverbs 18:21 The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit. (NIV) 1. Your tongue will direct your life James 3:2–4 Indeed, we all make many mistakes. For if we could control our tongues, we would be perfect and could also control ourselves in every other way. 3 We can make a large horse go wherever we want by means of a small bit in its mouth. 4 And a small rudder makes a huge ship turn wherever the pilot chooses to go, even though the winds are strong. (NLT) Proverbs 12:14 From the fruit of their lips people are filled with good things, and the work of their hands brings them reward. (NIV) Mark 11:23 “Truly I tell you, if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and does not doubt in their heart but believes that what they say will happen, it will be done for them. (NIV) 2.  Your tongue has the power to set your life on fire James 3:5-6  Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. 6 The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of one’s life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell. (NIV) Proverbs 13:3 Whoever guards his mouth preserves his life; he who opens wide his lips comes to ruin. (ESV) 3. You don't have the power to tame your tongue James 3:7-8 All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and sea creatures are being tamed and have been tamed by mankind, 8 but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. (NIV) Three God Keys To Controlling Your Tongue 1. Get your heart healthy Matthew 15:18-19 But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and these make a man 'unclean.' 19 For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander. (NIV) Luke 6:45 The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For out of the overflow of his heart his mouth speaks. (NIV) 2. Get a muzzle on your mouth Psalm 141:3 Set a guard over my mouth, Lord; keep watch over the door of my lips. (NIV) James 1:26 If anyone considers himself religious and yet does not keep a tight rein on his tongue, he deceives himself and his religion is worthless. (NIV) Proverbs 10:19 When words are many, sin is not absent, but he who holds his tongue is wise. (NIV) Proverbs 21:23 Whoever keeps his mouth and his tongue keeps himself out of trouble. (ESV) Proverbs 21:23 Those who guard their mouths and their tongues keep themselves from calamity (NIV) T - Is it True? H - Is it Helpful? I - Is it Inspiring? N - Is it Necessary? K - Is it Kind? 3. Get God’s help through prayer Psalm 19:14 May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, O LORD, my Rock and my Redeemer. (NIV)
