Some people would immediately answer, "Friday!” or “Payday!” But living joyfully means paying attention to not just your hard-earned paycheck but also what you're learning along the way. The joyful reward of a day's work is not just monetary, it's, also. the inevitable molding and shaping that's happening to you as a person-changes and improvements in your character or skill set you often don't even notice. For example, even an entry-level job can teach a person a great deal about technology, leadership, problem-solving, communication, and taking responsibility. It can mold someone's character by strengthening his or her capacity for patience. It can bring a timid person out of his shell or teach anargumentative individual about the art of negotiation. If you have a friend who's also a trusted colleague, ask him or her, “Do you feel I'm a more skilled or knowledgeable person than I was the day I was hired? In what way(s)?” You just might be delighted and surprised at the answer.
