IMAGE: The BUDDHA BARN, at EWAM, "Garden of 1000 BUDDHAS," Arlee, MONTANA USA. The visual composition of identical little Buddhas shading off into darkness reminds me of how the words of the piece "When anything is pointed out…" echo and fade off into the background. This is the sixth in a series of talks and short demonstrations around a new technique central to my Music, Poetry & Dance performance project, THE CIRCLE IN THE SQUARE. It’s called, TALKING HANDS / TALKING FEET. "When anything is pointed out..." is a little demonstration of how the technique of TALKING HANDS / TALKING FEET makes it possible to take a 37-step (syllable) aphorism, or sutra, of F.M. Alexander -- founder of the #ALEXANDERTechnique -- and actually "step it into music." And, of course, the reverse, "step it back into speech." "When anything is pointed out..." without talking about it how the music is composed simply demonstrates how the movement, the meaning, the energy of the text in listening might find its what I call "qualitative ground." In both Space & Time. The idea is that the rhythm and harmonies and sounds are already there--implicitly--in relational resonance space. HERE IS THE text. Like most aphorisms by F.M. Alexander, it is about habit. This is habit in the very most general sense, or the difficulty of change when we are held in self-destructive energy patterns--in thought & body--of the past. "When anything is pointed out, our only idea is to go from wrong to right in spite of the fact that it has taken us years to get wrong: We try to get right in a moment." [In the technical language of TALKING HANDS / TALKING FEET, that's 44-steps, with a Relational Resonance of n x n, or 44 x 44 = 1936. The idea is that all these nearly 2,000 implicit relationships between the sounds are potentially important or relevant. But instead of trying to 'think' about them consciously, which clearly is not possible, we "resonate with them," as a kind of sound and rhythm meditation. More on this later...] The etude or study aspect of the piece concerns the relationship between text + voice + instrument, all within this subtle and mysterious relational resonance space. I think TALKING HANDS/ TALKNG FEET is quite fun and healing. But don't take my word for it. Try it as part of your AT & YOGA practice! It is important to free the eyes by not using any notation, or written text. So the first thing we do is learn the 44-step sutra poem aphorism by heart. Drumming. Tapping. Singing. Dancing. It helps that the saying by F.M. ALEXANDER is a miniature masterpiece -- timeless and impersonal as it is true -- that speaks to the disharmony of the current cultural zeitgeist.
