Talking with Spencer Moravek About Student Anxiety and Stress (and Boredom) | Ep #7
from Be Evolved: Empowering Parents and Educators to Help Students Succeed · host Mary Miele
Spencer Moravek, an Evolved Education tutor, talks about student anxiety. He defines anxiety as an energy source. Anxiety burns "hot." He is curious about the types of energy that students use. Boredom is another energy that students use. He asks, "why is it that it is often overlooked- unlike the energy of anxiety, which is often used and feared." When students display boredom, we can keep going until we find what is exciting and interesting. PLEASE NOTE: Dorthea Fox is actually Nancy Hart. By using boredom to investigate interest, our classes and learning can become enriched and much more valuable. Spencer has helped many students to use anxiety to become a better student and learner. He talks about how to use that energy to support students. In one instance, he partners with teachers to change up an assignment in order to meet the interests of the student. In another, he builds in a reward system to get through the work he does not wish to do. Spencer also speaks about a study he was involved in while at the Brain and Language Lab at DePaul University.
