Last couple of in Zumis, but now here we are back together in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. What's going on? Feels good. Guys, I don't feel good.
I'm sore. Oh no. I was playing in a flag football league and I feel like I hurt my leg. I was trying to juke a little too quick.
How did you get in this league? You've been mentioning it a lot lately. I thought I just walked off. My friend Eli, my childhood buddy Eli.
He started this co-ed 7 on 7 football league. I have courses in the quarterback. I was just going to say, because you were talking about you were proud of yourself for throwing a long pass. We won the first game.
I was so pissed off. We lost last night against a team that we shouldn't have lost to. But you know, you'll play next week and you hope you're better. But I'm very sore and I was kind of thinking about getting older and I know Mike just had a basketball injury.
Oh yeah. And I don't like the idea of succumbing to age. Oh, now that we're this age. Oh, the action pains.
Whenever you're an old person going, that's not real. And now here we are. I guess it's real. Why is that?
Okay, but is that because we just aren't as active? I think it's because we're not as active anymore. We talked to a guy yesterday who's every fucking day and we were running around at 10, 15 for 15 minutes like crazy people. And then again, at 2 30 and we just did that every single day.
I don't think we'd be in as rough shape as we are. This was a conversation I was having. This guy is very in shape dude. You know, I'm Joe.
He's a basketball player. He's 45 years old though. I don't think you would care that I share that. But he was talking about basketball and I go, my body is like ruined.
I haven't played in probably over a year. And I go, am I ruined because I haven't played in a year? Am I ruined because I'm about to be 40? And he said that it's just because I haven't played a long time.
I mean, he said it happens to him. But once you get in the habit of playing, your body gets over it. Yeah, I think if the kids are just running around all the time, we just don't run around enough. 100%.
And also, the thing that happened was this gets to the point about repetition and doing something and being conditioned to it is it's like the pandemic. I didn't touch a basketball for almost like three years. I can count on my hand. I got two times.
I hooped in sort of that space. And then we hooped on Sunday and yeah, Dan Hamilton. Don't say we. Well, I had three plays and then I heard you.
30 seconds. I got 30 seconds. I got 30 seconds. Dan Hamilton basically got a loss on a switch.
So he got the ball down low Dan. Our friend is a big boy. He's a good glue. It was strong as fuck Dan, by the way.
And like by the way, Dan is wearing compression socks. Like he's decked out. I don't know if he was wearing a headband, but do you look like a guy who plays ball like every day of his life? He came in with a 24 pack of Gatorade like for everyone.
It just looked like, Oh my God, I'm not ready to play with Mike as you looked too prepared. I was so excited. So then I actually thought it was the first play, but you basically got judo choppers in the chest and it did not look severe. You're like, Oh, I'm out.
I don't know if I can like, I felt performative and jokey. I don't like how people are making fun of Anthony Davis right now for going out of there. And you actually didn't come back to play in the game. What happened was, yeah, so I was excited for this game.
So we put this game on because our good friend Shane, like he said, is about to be 40, but he's going on a big trip with Alex. You were there, Max. I know. And so and Shane's like a low key guy.
He's like, I don't want a big birthday. You know, we sit back to back in the office and I feel like I know you pretty well. You're one of the best friends in the world. And I felt like he was like, you didn't want anything.
You don't want something that you'd have to feel like pressure, but I was like, what's on the low key that you'd just show up to you and you would enjoy. It's like, let's just play some hoops. So it's trying to set up some hoops and maybe a drink or two after some food or whatever. I worked with Alex, sort of coordinated time that worked.
It moved from a Monday night thing, which Max was going to be at. He was. He was. He helped with the gym.
Get the basketball. Yes. No, that was not cool. So he was involved.
So and he was excited to come and then he couldn't come because it was end up on Sunday. I was very excited for this basketball game. I had these hilarious compression, like leggings that I'd never used. I think I had them for like running right before the pandemic.
They sat in my closeting. I was like kind of jogging for a bit and I was saying that I wanted like, because I was going to be jogging in the fall. So she's like, here, you can wear these when you jog away. I think the socks they help with circulation.
They're like, they're like, they're like, what they were what you were seeing me wearing is like long johns. And they help with circulation. I don't know what they do. They.
I only knew people like in their sixties who wear them taking flights. Like Dwayne Wade wears them. Like you see, like, like, whoopers like compression leggings everybody. Oh, so like, it's like how Iverson wears the legs.
Okay. So I had these things that I was going to use to run in the fall. I like the room on this. And so I showed up in my basketball.
If it I just like I had to sharps my hair, kind of went back. So like I did roll in with the Gatorade for everybody ready to go. Third playing the game, Dan Hamilton. I lose my search.
I go to like trying like hit the ball. But he comes up so hard with his elbow rate on like right, like at the top of my rib, which has been hurt before. And he knocked the wind completely out. And so I was like, do that thing.
I'm kind of like walk around and circles on the corner. Like, you know, I can't breathe and like whatever psycho tags back in for me. And then I go and sit on the sidelines. I'm kind of just like move.
But every time I like go to like run or it's just like it wins me again. Like on my whatever. I don't know what you did to my river brew something. But this gets to the whole thing about age.
And it's like, you don't recover like you used to recover like I'm always to play the cringe. Like I like jammed my finger. And I stayed in the game. I can't imagine doing that now.
It's just like back in a game shape. Now you have to be like, you know, by the time I turn 45, I'm going to be like, Joanna, I'd like to. But like where did like, you got to find the time you got to find a run. Then you got to make sure you're available for that.
Like, you know, like, you know, you're in a football league, but it's like, I know, but that's even kind of hard. I just joined a league for the one from for. Yeah. Maybe it could be the same team.
This is how the captains are picking people. We were Hamilton team, which I didn't want that to happen. Fuck for making a random. Anyway, this league, I was like, there's no way I can do Tuesday night and stay in the city.
But yeah, anyway, it was what did you think of the bad? Did you have a good time? I did. Yes.
It was fun. That's all that matters. It felt weird though, because it was me, John Popless and Dan. No, and psycho against MAMIC peak, who's very good.
AJ, who's very good. And Dan Hamilton is very strong. And obviously, like, we may never play again. But I'm still in pain.
They were shooting like 80, 90% from the field. And like, I forgot how to play defense and they murdered us the first two games. So then Popless and I had a little sidebar and we go like, we're tired. We haven't played a long time.
But let's just play like our life depends on it. And let's see if we can win a game and like pretend we're young again. So I just got that mentality. And then we won 11 to 2.
Wow. Then I was having a lot of fun. And of course, the first two games Mike is filming, like trying to put up a little clip of us playing. Well, but he can't get a clip of me playing.
I was trying to say it's birthday. I was like, I need to get a good clip of Shane doing something I'm going to put on the Insta thing. So the third game, I'm like smoking people on doing all my stupid little tricky shit is everything's going in. And I look at Mike and you're just like on your phone eating Reese's cups.
Pull out the fucking camera man. Like a full game. You didn't film anything. Well, I mean, that's what I just want to do.
I'm just waiting until we went to the brewery and watching hoops. They had the Philly game was on. But yeah, I have that competitive bug back. And I just want to be able to play offense and defense.
And I'm at right now. I'm at the fitness level of like I have to choose one to play. Yeah, I was meeting football. I was just quarterback and then as soon as we went back on defense, I'm like, all right, someone else coming for me.
Yeah, it was kind of fun. But all right. What else is going on guys? Music is going on.
So yeah, the song is called laundry pile. And it's coming out by the time the steps are dropped, it'll be out. Wait, the songs are not right now. They just came over there.
No, it's a teaser. Oh, there's so many different parts to a song. Well, these days it's kind of exhausting because the one face one because tick tock teaser sound could be pivotal to the success of the song. It actually drops on streaming.
You don't want it to be too popular because if people catch wind of it and they can't find on Spotify, then that's not good. It's a stupid shit. So I think it's interesting probably for industry people are young musicians listening. I like it's going to be cool.
Yeah. Well, so it's and we pride ourselves in doing a good job with marketing anything that we do. And this is a decidedly softer song. So we're not like leading with like a sports anthem or something like that.
Normally like our Kelsville punch in the face. But you know that can't fire album, right? Yeah, your fan base is a little bit used to that. Yeah, I like that sort of acoustic side to us.
And also like at least my algorithm on tick tock is a lot of a lot of singer songwriter music and it feels like that kind of music. We played the record to a bunch of people at the we have a full record, by the way. It's not just very secretive about this listening party. By the way, in the last episode.
Oh, yeah. So we had a listening party for every other team. How to go. It was awesome.
So by the time this episode is out. Everyone will know that there's a full record. The song is called laundry pile. The record is called laundry pile.
And we played it for our team. We invited people from Live Nation and other partners that we were playing the time. And it's a very much like camp our chords in that it's stripped back. It's a lot more sort of singer songwriter.
But it's all new 10 new original songs. It's not like covers of previous songs that we put up. And our one friend Eric was like, I don't know if this is like my favorite RKels record, but it's going to be the record I listened to the most. And I thought that was sort of interesting because it's the kind of music.
You put folklore or the Lumineers or amount of amount of joy. That kind of music that you just kind of put on while you're doing other stuff. Background music. Yeah.
You're the ultimate promo guy. No, but I mean, I think it's like intimate. And if you're in the mood for it's like getting into lyrics. Oh, please.
Sexual. Intimate. Is there a song on the album that would be good for getting sexual? Is there?
I don't think so. I think it's sad. It kind of got me in the mood a little bit. Like not necessarily the word.
Yeah, I liked it. Yeah. I liked it a lot. And actually I want to give a shout out for our listeners to Shane because I.
I'm full. It's on the cell. I remember back in the fall, I was sending you some stuff. I'm just kind of working on stuff just for myself and it's pretty bare bones acoustic kind of music.
And Shane was like, Max, I think these are good songs and I like them, but I think you can be even more honest and you can be more specific. And that is going to be the best kind of version of this time song. And so that night I wrote, I started writing Launch About, which is a song that we're leading with and what the records called. So it's very cool.
So thank you very much. I've affected history. Music is cool. Yeah, no, it's just cool.
And I think it goes to show like the power of an assignment to like the power of a creative assignment because I was like, and I still have very happy with all the songs on the record, but the centerpiece is definitely laundry pile. And if you hadn't said, hey, like be more specific. Yeah, you know, and I was like, okay, here's a challenge. And then I just, you know, I just wrote that and I have the demo on my phone.
Yeah, I was like, I was inspired by Mike through his experience and when Mike was a songwriter. So I was like, oh, this really worked for Mike. So do that thing that Mike did. So which was just being very specific.
Yeah, exactly. That one that one song. But when people are at a listening party, yeah, what's the etiquette on where to look? Oh, this is a great question because we thought a lot about this.
So it was in this listening room at Universal Music, which is in Liberty Village. And they have a room where they host events. I'm like, Lewis Capaldi was there and feisted it. Did we do a, did I host a thing for whiskey tasting with you guys there?
I think we talked about this for air miles. And we wouldn't have been built there. I might have been at the live nation lounge or something. Oh, that's what that was.
Whiskey tasting is the you hosting. That's my second. That's my second career. So we, so the album artwork, we can get in this morning and closer to the release date, but it's from Andrew Scott who's the drummer of Sloan and he's an amazing painter.
So we brought the piece in and kind of lit it up like it was a gallery. So that's the first thing we did. We're like, okay, we want this. Some people can look at something.
It's just going to be this like three by three foot beautiful painting of a laundry machine on fire on the beach. Number two, we printed out lyric sheets because one of my favorite things to do, especially as a kid, I was buying albums just to read along to lyrics as a song goes. And so we had these as I put together these really like lyric books and we told everyone, you know, I want to run your phone and everyone should read along. And then the last thing that Mike D thought about was like, what if we gave everyone pens and people could just make notes and because they have to hand back the lyric sheet and I was like, the little lyric book.
So people wrote down their thoughts and their feelings on the songs in real life. It's almost like market research and criticism. It was just things that maybe it was a kill like this one. Shit song.
A little slow. So yeah, we were able to read much of the feedback from the songs and like what it reminded people of and not going to the national. You'll be seeing my lawyer. It's his note.
Yeah. So yeah, so we're excited. You know, I feel like, you know, we put a lot of music. It's gonna be our eighth record, I think.
It's just a lot. And we put it in September of 2022. We put it in September of 2021. We put a campfire chords in August of 2020.
Do you consider campfire chords an album? I don't really, but some RKL fans do. Right. And some of the hardcore ones get offended when I'm like, that's not really an album.
It's my favorite album because it's a cover album of your own songs. Yeah, with a couple new ones. Gotcha. I think I don't think I was in the mood at all to write anything that was like, here's another big old banger from RKL.
Bum, bum, bum, bum, bum, bum, bum, bum. It's like there's so many of those. You can do those hits in your sleep. Not even that.
Just making said this is hard. Now it's just like what songs are we gonna play? We have two main songs to choose from. Yeah.
So when you get to this album, which like you've said is a little bit more in that singer-songwriter folklori vein, we have a section of the live show now where you bring it down. Yeah. And there's a couple things I can't talk with just yet. Gotcha.
But related to that vibe that might have been the summer. It's exciting. Did you ever do an album just full of arena-athos? That's all the other albums, man.
I've been trying. I've listened. We've had what over 200 interviews of artists, people who have been on here promoting their records, talking about the records. I always ask this question.
How open are you gonna be about your inspiration for the record in your press as you go forward? Good question. I haven't thought that far ahead. The listening session was a good opportunity to start thinking about how you want to talk about it.
It's a very intimate, heartfelt record. It's about being confused a lot in your love life and stuff. Mmm. Mmm.
That's a good tease. It's a good tease. I didn't think you'd say that much. I was gonna say you're gonna dance around.
That was pretty dancy. Well, he said the L word, which is rare, I find. I don't know. I don't know.
It feels like... I don't know how much I wanted to. It's a great record. I think a lot of artists do is sign their own things to the lyrics.
They mean something to them. They certainly need to know you're gonna put this for every song. Yeah, well, the other thing about this whole process, so there's obviously the writing and recording of the record. And I want to get into it because on another episode when the whole thing's out probably, just when it meant to the band, because it was an amazing team building, unifying moment for our group.
It was amazing that the band was so invested in it. It's kind of a self-produced record too. Cool. But the spot that we're in right now is just marketing the fucking thing, which is a whole other creative exercise.
And so it's like, okay, best practices on TikTok. How do we have grabby hooks to get the average listener in? And it's endless. It's really like you could be thinking about this 24 hours a day and you don't know exactly what's gonna work.
You have a feeling of what's good, what's bad. But yeah, that's what we're at right now. And I think I can talk about this. I was, I sent a song to Buble.
And Buble had like FaceTime me immediately. And he was on a massage chair. But with his, like, with the cameras, like, he's through the whole thing. And he immediately starts riffing on all these TikTok ideas.
Like, all right, this is what you need to do. And he's given me all this kind of like amazing advice. What I liked about talking to Buble about it, and this is probably true of anybody who cares and is an entertainer and wants to do as good a job as they can, is that he's like, listen, like you now's the time you got to strike. I'm gonna get to work on some stuff, you know, call your friends, like get them involved.
Like, so he's just like, oh, I love like what a try hard, Buble is because I'm a try hard to see a good TikToker. Yeah, great. Okay. I find the TikTok algorithm is so weird right now.
It's the worst it's ever been. Yeah. Why do you say that? Doesn't reward TikToks the way it used to?
Yeah. Like one that I would do that would get hundreds of thousands gets 2000. Isn't it crazy? I don't like that.
It's like one out of one, you know, we'll get into the hundreds of thousands where before it was like one out of every three. Yeah, it's so stupid. Fucking dumb app. But yeah, so if you guys have any TikTok ideas out there, just send them over because we'll do them.
Like, yeah, but there's news about Matt Healy that I'm dying to hear about. So our listeners that I love the 1975. I also I love that Shane segway that he's no idea what the news is. He just knows that Ash put it in the pod group and then he said before we roll.
I can read about this so I can learn about it in the segment. Yeah, that's good. Let's do it. Max.
So we love Taylor Swift. I love Matt Healy. Taylor Swift is famously broken off things with Joe Alwyn, her kind of secret boyfriend that she was with for a long time. I'll also say I did the same thing.
I had a read about this either. I put you on the spot, but I'm still. No, it's fine. Yeah, I'm.
Anyway, by the time this comes up, maybe they're broken up now or maybe they're together. So Matt Healy and Taylor Swift are together. So rumors started to come out that he was going to tell us Matt Healy. He always talks about this.
He's five seven. No, he's six feet and he's always mad though that people don't think he's short. I thought maybe they were a tall, he's a small situation. Like he's like, Danny can tell he's small.
No, no, I mean, she might be the part around the same height. So rumors started coming out that they're dating and he was going to show up to her Nashville. She was doing two or three nights at the same time in Nashville and leading into that he had a show like tonight before and the fans are so obsessed that during one of the love songs, he kind of mows into the camera that was following him on the stage. He's like, I love you.
You know, this is about you. I love you. The next night at her show, she was like in Tampa or something like that. She was back in the camera.
I love you. This is about you. So all the internet's loose. Oh my God, they're talking to each other.
Wow. So there's a new story that breaks that says Matt Healy and Taylor Swift are dating. He's going to show up in Nashville to the show and Phoebe Bridgers is opening the show and there's rumors that like Jack Antonoff set them up because Jack Antonoff worked on the 90s and five record. He obviously worked on the Taylor Swift record.
They're all friends, all part of the same group. So on my TikTok algorithm, it's literally just fan videos of Matt Healy in some kind of private box with like Gigi Hadid and who else? Some other models like part of her crew, like singing along and just like and just enjoying the show. So and then there's like paparazzi photo of like the two of them in like a SUV or whatever.
Anyway, I'm loving all this because it's I think it really works for both of them. I don't give a fuck about celebrity culture, but I do love to other stuff. I love Matt Healy and the only thing that could make Matt Healy and then I say if I'm bigger in this planet is him dating Taylor Swift. Do you think it's a still cold PR plan?
And the only thing that can make Taylor Swift cool. I should probably date a number of cool guys, but like he is like King shit bad boy, but also the woke King right now in his own weird way. And I think it gives her credit points and gives him popularity points. And so I'm so and they're also like entertainers and like Matt Healy has talked about Kim and Kanye West being art pieces and how like they are they exist to be this like famous couple that kind of do insane public events and like there was very much public figures.
And he's a bit of like an actor guy in that respect living art. He's living art. He's living art. He still loves to do like spit wine and Johnny Oka the first book.
I didn't know. He'd probably be taking from that school of thought. So I can also see a world where he and Taylor have been like, yo, this is really good for both of us. Like you're you're single.
I'm single. Let's just tell everyone that we're fucking dating. And even if we're not because it's just really good for both of us. You're suggesting it's a mutually beneficial arrangement.
And maybe not love. I don't know. Maybe it was love. I wasn't love.
I wouldn't hold it against them and I'd tailor even more. He's actually more cool points. That's what she gets older. Cool points might hurt her.
No. I mean, these are like arena they're selling arenas around the world. So it's not like he's like so left of center like he's still a very popular guy, but he's pretty cool. But can he still kiss young women at a show?
Are you still going to do that thing where you're just kissing girls on stage? Yeah. They end up in a jealousy trap and she starts kissing young boys. That would be a good jealousy trap.
Yeah. Fuck. Yeah. What do you guys think?
Do you guys think that it's true love that you've learned about this last three minutes or do you think that it's a publicity stunt? And if it is a publicity stunt, let me say I'm all about it. I think it's great. I feel like Taylor must be hard to be in a relationship with.
I don't know. You should have got to be in a relationship with? No, I don't. I don't.
So could be a good match. Maybe two like challenging weird people like alpha personalities. I also think they like formula. They're also, they just know, there's probably shelf life with a relationship.
And the next album is written already, because everybody's gonna know for both of them. And each of those new songs, whenever they come out in two years, everyone's gonna know exactly what they're about and it's gonna make the songs that much bigger. It's kind of awesome. I think I love it.
I love it. If I was pitching like a, I don't know if the guy that does like British comedies, like Notting Hill or like songs of lyrics or whatever, my pitch for this plot would be two big, like international stars get together as an arrangement. And they're gonna get all the publicity you said, one gets street cred, one gets a boost in their popularity. And they both get records out of the eventual sort of manufactured breakup.
But something happens, they didn't anticipate. They actually fall in love. They fall in love, madly in love. And it ends up ruining their career because they're so content, they just kinda go and get a nice font.
And their career is a steady decline. Well, cause they just go live on a farm in the country and they're happy and they raise some children and they basically leave their international sort of pop star in behind because they fall in love. What's the turn at the end of the movie? Cause like, cause something has to happen.
If you jump ahead five years and you realize that their family doesn't make them happy and they're desperate to become famous again. They're actually so dead inside that they need the adulation of strangers. Is strangers? Yeah.
And need strangers to love me because those I know is not enough. So I went to the Wilson movie with Jennifer Lopez, where- Oh that just came out recently. Yeah, she kinda has a publicity stunt, but then she actually falls in love with the one, Really? Yeah, she's like a pop star?
She's a pop star? Yeah, and he's just a normal guy. Yes. And she falls in love with him.
Yeah. Well, it's kinda like Noting Hill, right? Where she's the big star and she tries to avoid the pop erazi. And so, she goes into his book store, he grants books store or whatever.
And then that's the famous, like the line like the line goes into the boys standing in front of a girl asking her. No, yeah. That's from the end of that book or the movies, sorry. I've never seen that one.
No. Oh, it's very good. As far as those rom-coms go, it's very charming. You have really good chemistry.
Acast powers the world's best podcasts. Here's a show that we recommend. Welcome back to Gloves Off Season 2, eight brand new episodes about the threat to Canada's sovereignty, and how middle powers can thrive in the new world disorder. I'm Stephen Marsh.
Last season, the show was about surviving. Since then, Canada has emerged as a prominent global force. And that's why the question this season is what cards do we hold, and how do we win? The gloves come off on Canada Day, July 1.
Get it wherever you get your podcasts, and watch on YouTube. Acast helps creators launch, grow, and monetize their podcasts everywhere, acast.com. What do you think makes better music? Being in love or breaking up?
What a great question. I think that being in love is a shorter, you get less out of it. You do two or three of those songs. But that I think breaking up can offer hundreds of songs.
But as a listener, what do you prefer to listen to? Or maybe there's another question. There's the unrequited kind of like, I want to hold your hand would be an unrequited kind of like longing song. Huh?
There's three categories. So you think personally what's the best? I see. Were you asking him as a songwriter what he gets more mileage out of a content or what do we like as listeners?
As listeners. And then there's just the fucking song. Try and resonance. Yeah.
Yeah. He's not very subtle in that one. Yeah. I think I, oh good question.
I tend to like the falling love songs. Like I have my favorite song right now. It's a good question. By the landslide is Waffle House.
And I fucking love that song. Is that Brother Joe's Brothers? Oh, it's great. How's it go?
The Joe Bros. wrote it on my wrote page. Oh, I'm going to play for you guys right now. It's wow.
Ash, can we clear that? Is it going to play on the second? I can say less. Because there is a lyric that in the chorus, I'm like, what is the lyric?
I can't even make out the lyric. But my TikTok algorithm, besides for being Mattie Healy at Taylor's shows, is the Jonas Brothers. That's all I'm getting. And the lyric, tell me, okay, tell me if you guys know what he's saying in this lyric.
Yeah. Yeah. Okay. We know what's always love.
Yeah. No, the one before that. Oh, some other father. Yeah.
So the lyric is shaking to get it. Well, I was listening to the wrong part. Give me one more chance. I like this game.
It's hard. Yeah. Headstrong father and I didn't get that one. It's okay.
This is so interesting because when I first of the quote, I was like, what the fuck is he saying? I was trying to guess I went through the synagogue. I was trying to get that. The synagogue.
I just had to say. And the sermon of sermon life. I don't know. Okay.
So I don't know what the fuck was, but I've watched so many other fucking TikToks and criminal and criminal. So the lyric is, I'll go from the full chorus is, no, that's not getting stressed. It's going to get figured out. Deep conversations.
That's the waffle house. Headstrong father and a determined mother. Wow. That's it.
That's we did. But you know it's always and a determined mother yeah, and I like but the thing is like it's bad It's bad because you know the listener doesn't know what the fuck there's no one you know it You're like oh that's my favorite lyric of the song because you're getting a sense of who the person is that you're arguing with of course Who's like oh you got a headstrong father to determine mother? That's what makes you you know I was trying those two words together interesting because determined the the the M and determined slides into the mother Naturally so it sounds like one word determine mother like you're actually you don't get me determined now You kind of just go right into mother determine mother. Yeah, it's a weird one But interesting but once you know the lyric it actually makes an elevates the entire song You're like okay, you're hanging on the waffle house is only love whatever But it's like oh the actual key detail is that you like that?
It's like in a cipherable and you have to lean in and normally would say that's a Miss cute right like that's a negative. Yeah, yeah Yeah, you're thinking it's a feature now I think it's a feature and very rarely in pop songwriting is that happened but like once in a while this thing will happen where you're like Oh, that's what Katy Perry saying that song actually like it's the most famous missus Kiss this guy. Yeah, kiss this guy. I feel like blinded by the light or Like a yes.
Yeah, yeah people always kind of just mumble through the Bruce Prince. Yeah, isn't it? Yeah, it's like Better than the way that's the 80s made their wonder the ones that actually got the hit with it is heard lyrics Let's see so but that song is about sort of like being a lot with somebody in the passion But yeah, it's a good question Oh because it's like it kind of reminds me weirdly of like news like like John Krasinski had the good news network Which was kind of popular for a minute, but then there's the old adage about the news that if it bleeds it leads like we are drawn to negative News stories naturally we just it's like there's like nobody is going to sit in the good for two I don't know what it says about it as a species I honestly think maybe music is somewhat like that as well like a song about falling in love can be nice But I feel like it doesn't like attach stuff to people the same as a breakup song or something that you think or hits or loves On the pain songs. Yeah, I think right.
Yeah, cuz ballads aren't as Haiti You know what a publisher told me once I was actually telling some of the jump up This is years and years years ago Some of the work for me am I just think right songs with sunshine in them or Sun because advertisers want them people to send the most and I was like, oh, that's an interesting thing and I saw the Beatles number one stream song is Here comes the Sun and I knew that a couple like I knew that a couple years ago I saw that like over-haged you all these things here comes the Sun It's like Cheryl Crow's most I bet you if you look I don't know this for fact So could the Sun might be her number one thing I guarantee you lens most popular I Interesting thing like like basically I was one of my songs but some people like being the Sun I'm in the Sun is yeah, there's number one song of any of their songs so it's bigger than so It's only work today so 141 million I love that song Stupid because I look up most famous misheard lyrics. I love it and it's on NMA So you think it'd be like a good reputable source, but this these are just like stupid like puns. Okay This one's the number one money for nothing in the chips for free chips for free. That's what I was actually thought like What is it drinks chicks for chicks?
Yeah, it's almost like they're doing parody there Right rock and roll see that girl watcher scream kicking the dancing queen. No. Yeah, so what is the dancing queen digging? Digging the dancing queen excuse me.
Well, I guess this guy dancing cool like you this guy. Yeah, that's what people Oh, I was you saying was he gay? Yeah, yeah dancing queen feel the beat from the tangerine like nobody thought that This is a dumb list. What's a misheard?
Archales lyric that's common and you're like that's not it Shh good question Tim does a lot of puns. Yeah, we've gone over that. Oh, there's a bunch actually that people Sometimes you are okay. Well, think about that.
What's your favorite sad song speaking? We'll do sad and happy song Well, it's funny. We were out for the basketball game AJ was saying that yellow was a sad song that we break it down and yellow is not a No, I told him it's a fucking love song. I think slow songs are always misconstrued as sad.
Yeah, okay What's my favorite sad song like for me like we're talking about what's it like what's it? People try more to sad songs or happy songs. I mean it was like I think happy songs I want to feel good or affirmation feel inspired like hey, Jude is a song that is like It's meant to inspire you to even when you're down It's like the the author's giving sort of like a pep talk advice and how to feel better etc But a song that like I connect to so much is a no distance left to run by blur Which is like one of the saddest breakup songs I go it's like it's over and it would end this way You've never seen me turn around what I'm saying. I got a distance left to run like basically Just the end of the relationship even though they had all this love and it's it's awesome.
The melody's great the guitar works Hey, I love that song, but I'm like it's such a sad sad song You know, but why do I remember that one more so than like I can't even think what's a famous like love song my favorite love song Is the book of love Peter Gabriel the book of love? It's actually by it's a cover It's not even his song but his version of it magnetic fields is the original but Peter Gabriel wrote and they play weddings and stuff And I was mr. Cry it's really good the book of love the book of love is long and boring there's lots of chapters and You're thinking of Chapter one It's like a 60 song or something. I like Sam cook songs like all those are you know love songs.
Yeah, what's the sad song though? That's You know one is the loneliest number Don't let me down love song or sad song. It's like a warning I love the little chorus or whatever you want to call that I'm in love for the first time don't you know what's gonna last Actually, what is some good sat? I feel like the national has a lot of sad songs soon enough We're gonna love that's content enough working love will make a man out of you That's actually you'll be content is person as well.
I love it. She's just yeah, cuz I know you're a big Content. She's part of the group. There you go.
Um, anyway, man. What else is going on? I think I another subject. Yeah, a little How long we go for it?
We're sitting it'll get 37 minutes. Okay, let's play the long show do we care about that or is that not? No, that's interesting. Okay, I got that one.
Okay, delete that Okay, so you guys are sort of experts in this This comedy show has a imagine dragons sketch in it. There's a moment Where they measure And the singer of imagine dragons just showed up at a rally for writers And people are making jokes about it like this is you know if you're on strike this is the last thing you'd want to hear So I guess my question is is it do you think it too much shit the magic dragons? Are you asking are they new Nickelback? Yeah, and who would you want would you be pissed off if they showed up to if you guys Run strike I wouldn't be pissed off.
I think it'd be very funny. It's interesting Also, it's like what do you do like just sing us a song like bring our duty pizza? Like are you helping the front line like are you just here to like lift a morale by singing fucking What's the fact? You're just gonna come and give us some a cappella radio active.
That doesn't help me What would you prefer Nickelback showing up me like kicking your ass will be What you bring it to be copies your pizza will be funnier though, right? Sick I heard you on a podcast talking about how much you love them. We do this negotiate negotiation Who do you want to show up? After musician it could be dead Sure, yeah, Beatles would be cool.
Yeah Man Anybody rich that shows up to sort of be a bit indulgent is like a lot of those writers aren't you know You do the press are like oh, there's that famous person's online and figure this James L Brooks who's like a very famous show creator You know whatever director it's like but the vast majority of people are like living wage working people in a union that are like This strike is like they're fucked foods off their table And I sometimes think if you're one of these people like is it a morale boost to have I don't know that you'd have that's cool If someone famous showed up and was just like yeah, I'm here It just depends on how what they're doing when they get there It's like they're making it all kind of about them then you're sort of maybe rolling your eyes a little bit Yeah, like I don't know if Chris Martin showed up with a piano on the back of a flatbread and like sang a couple songs Awesome So yeah, like again like maybe just my taste of music maybe there are some people that are really cool down the guys You just open saying I don't know I don't even know but I just got anything but who you want to show up in this I think you should I go Jordan would be cool if you brought a good You can shoot Yeah, it's like Jordan. Yeah, it's me like can you can you spell the horse though if you're writer? He gets in a break there Yeah, it's a good idea throw a football right with Tom Brady That's cool, you know what maybe I'm maybe I'm underestimating when you're out there forever eight hours a day Maybe any sort of entertainment is nice to pass the times All right, that was it for your list. Oh, I got more give us one more Oh, okay, here's thing I went to a very cool event on Monday and I was invited last month by friend David and it's a program called real Start it was it was started by this high school teacher in Charon named Adrian and she she's not in the film business at all but she teaches at like an inner city high school with lots of like immigrants and new Canadians and She was like these kids are so talented and have stories to tell and I want to show them that there's a path to do this So she recruited her university best pal Evan Goldberg to to help start the program Know who he is Evan Goldberg is the writing partner for Seth Rogen.
He's a friend Vancouver He went to be Gail. I think lives in LA now And he's like you know one of the biggest writer producers in Hollywood Yeah, he's a part of basically everything set does and so as a result the kids story board these these movies these short films And then they get like professional studios like animation studios and professional voice actors to play the roles So like wow they show we saw the seven minute short about this is black girl who has strained her hair and she's getting lots of compliments on Instagram But then this one boy says like how long did take you to straighten hair? That's all your hair She looks like and through the animation she goes inside the phone and starts realizing what it's like to look up at people Who are on their phones all day long and what they're actually going through it's a great little story and he said has a bunch of different Hollywood actors playing some of the roles and they have an animation studio involved and Anna Perna is a sponsor A bunch of other film companies are sponsors of this event and when it was at the Royal Theatre on College Street We go in there and there's all these notes of congratulations from Seth Rogen Sashabar and Cohen He's a Scott sponsor. He's saying these nice things about the program And it was just so fucking cool and a very sort of like boots on the ground approach to like showing any young person that like This is how it's done It's like it doesn't have to be as mysterious You pull back the curtain and you get to work on stuff And I think a lot of people that are born into privilege understand that immediately because their parents go Oh, my buddy works in film Just talk to that guy and those paths are obvious But if you don't have those paths right in front of you then you're like how the fuck do I ever do anything?
So I just think that program probably changed the lives a lot of a lot of kids And maybe think about you too But how you guys think you would do in this era because the technology is a lot more readily available for anybody who wants to make Stuff which is actually really cool because probably when you guys were growing up like buying a camera and editing anything together Was probably so expensive and such a chore. Yeah, now there's so much competition Oh, interesting. So anybody can do it. You also really needed to I don't know if this is true But like you really had to be into it and pursue it now it feels so like omnipresent Like everybody is in media or entertainment of some level like so you have an Instagram account You're sort of a savvy sort of putter together of content.
Yeah, there's too many opportunities out there for these kids Yeah, like our parents are curating their Facebook whatever like I just like everybody thinks with that brain now Or like knows the numbers to everyone's like an analytics on the outside Everybody's everything and I just think like everybody feels like they're a part of the entertainment field on some level You're not like whether you're posting for your kids or whatever you're curating you're thinking in a certain way I think back when we were like teenagers you really it was harder to find people obsessed with like SNL or who like how something gets made or like people that were really nerdy about film directors now It feels like a lot of people on our into that and doing that kind of work But did you say it's accurate or do you think that's like yeah everyone's doing? Everyone's doing it's like a social thing. It's not even to be famous. No, sometimes you might just be trying to do something to like impress your friends You go viral.
Yes. Yes, everybody does is a point I think back then it was more niche You're happy that you grew up at the time that you did. Oh, you know, it's interesting Well, first of all actually I want to ask that was a great question I think that was a good way to open that but I was gonna ask did you tell Evan that story about how you asked for the photo on the record Of the hall of the you do not remember me. I don't think you did You know funny story Evan and then explain the thing Yeah, I don't you know, it's a good question like I for me to get my path into like the industry so random I entered a VJ search I got in I was one of eight people that got to come to Toronto I think I've told the story before and there's a way longer version of story But eight people out of over two thousand trees that have to come to Toronto for the weekend and be on TV for a whole weekend And like back then in like 2002 and two it was like being on TV was a big deal All the time like I was like Hamilton famous like it was crazy and fun So I didn't get in I got in the top five of the eight and then I got caught when it got down to three I got called into his office She's like oh you're a little bit too much like Rick the temp was still around Okay, whatever and then Justin Stockman amazing potfather, you know, interesting He brought me back to work very sort of like unit assistant work my way up But for a guy from Hamilton that literally I was out of high school I didn't go to call I didn't do anything I just started to apply to schools and then I got in here as a unit system for as a day And then I was able to sort of like grow that into a career But that entry point was so fucking rare that that was like a lottery ticket That was like me winning a lottery and I was like wow like I just got a career down in Toronto Which was so random and kind of like lightning striking but I love that it happened that way and it's unique But we were like how did you get in it's one my vice antiquated because it was so long ago Two I guess now you get in based on like the strength of your YouTube video I don't know what you think like I'm antiquated I guess because people ask me and I go everyone I know has one contest to get here Mark Myers one the time I won MTV's So I just go yeah, I just entered contest man like People ask me all the time how to break into TV and I always say the same thing Oh, yeah, okay, how do you think you break in now?
Like is it just like it's only so many spots like in a job like this most people are doing their own thing now and trying to be Independent but like you want to work for yeah, like it's like yeah I don't know just produce shit like we made our own pilot Yes, get you and a lot of people ask us how we did that and I find people don't want to shoot pilots They just want to keep pitching and pitching like just make it yeah Make it like actually show people how funny you are I got that from listening to a podcast with Andy Samberg Mmm who was just saying that there was lonely island no one thought that the shit would work on SNL So they just shot it and show them like here and they're like oh this could work and then they start going viral Yeah, it's so easy so it's very hard with you're just like talking through creative idea for people to totally understand it sometimes you can do it Okay, I get it but often I'm like no this is actually what it's gonna look like And that's the thing I think if you're a young person yeah making stuff is good It's probably some combination of like just your general attitude and how you appear in the room you're like you're real You're like oh just on the side I've done all these different things just with my friends just show that you're passionate about it And then probably if you if there's some creative program at college or university that probably helps You know if you want a job like a media company But I don't know fellas that is our time for today that is all that is our episode Thank you to meet the Nash.
