Taming the Storm that is like a fire going off in the brain of a child and you can't reason with a fire alarm, so you can't reason with them?
from The Dr Maya Way
Right, the public meltdown- that sudden storm of emotion that leaves you feeling totally helpless, frustrated, maybe even a little embarrassed. Well, today we're gonna dive into the science and the strategy behind those toddler tantrums, and we're gonna learn how to turn that chaos into connection. Oh, yeah, we have all been there. You're just trying to get through the grocery store, and boom, your child is on the floor, a tiny whirlwind of fury, maybe because he said no to a candy bar. Everyone's eyes are on you, and your first thought is almost always, I've got to get this under control. But hang on a second, because this next idea is a total game-changer. What if that huge outburst isn't defiance at all? What if it's really just a desperate signal from a kid who is completely overwhelmed and literally doesn't have the words to explain what's going on inside? You know, it's crucial to know the difference between a tantrum and a meltdown. A tantrum is often an attempt to get it, but a meltdown is something else entirely. It's a nervous system overload. It's like a fire alarm going off in their body, and you can't reason with a fire alarm, so why can't you reason with them? To get that, we need to take a peek inside their brain. There's this amazing concept from Dr Dan Siegel called flipping the lid, and it perfectly explains what's happening in their head during a meltdown. Here's how it works. When your child is calm, their thinking is in control, but when a huge emotion hits, the emotional brain- the amygdala- sounds this massive alarm, and that alarm is so loud it hijacks the whole system, and the thinking brain goes completely offline. I mean, at that moment they literally cannot access logic or reason. It's just gone. OK, so here's our game plan. First, we'll get into what a tantrum really is. Then we'll look at prevention. After that, we'll cover what to do right in the heat of the moment, how to repair and recover, when to seek help, and finally how to make that shift from being a firefighter to an architect.
