Tara: Hey, hey! I'm looking forward to that 250 4th of July weekend, don't know about you. Already got the menu planned at my house. We're going to have a ball. If you're traveling, folks, it's supposed to be a record traveling weekend. Uh, so be aware of that. 72.2 million Americans are expected to travel over 50 miles for Independence Day, surpassing the previous record of 71.8 million, including another record—61.1 million, I'm sorry, 61.4 million driving. So, best time to leave because the roads are going to be crazy? Mmm, right about now. Best time to leave right about now. Maybe drive in the middle of the night, it's going to be nuts. So, just a sign of a health in the economy, especially with gas prices dipping a little bit. Meanwhile, in Europe, what are they doing? Ripping air conditioning out. People dying in one of the worst heat waves they've had. It's going to be a scorcher of a weekend. And what are they saying in New York City? Folks, this is a cautionary tale. Mayor Zohran Mamdani holding a press conference to demand—and this is going to be great for business—that business owners set their air conditioning to 78 degrees. Zohran Mamdani (Audio Clip): ...And to every business owner, please set your thermostats to 78 degrees to alleviate the stress on our power grid. Every worker in New York City has the right to a safe workplace, and that includes safety in extreme heat. Tara: Okay, so what did he say there? Well, you're going to have to bust your AC up to 78, but if somebody dies, falls out from heatstroke, that's on you. They have a right to safety. So go ahead and kill them by turning up the AC. Mhm, that's what he just said. But it's instructive why. Because New York has shut down a lot of their power grid. That's why they got to run it at 78. It's not because it's hot. They used to have the capacity to handle it. But then, in April 2020 and April 2021, they shut down Indian Point Energy Center, the biggest source of energy. 25% of the energy consumed in the lower state came from there. It was a nuclear plant—one would think, nothing wrong with it. They just decided they didn't like nuclear; they're liberals. So it had to be shut down. Okay, fine, cool. But before—not cool, actually very hot—before you shut a thing like that down, wouldn't it make sense to have your replacement energy available to go online? No, they didn't. As a result, 20 to 25% of the daily energy needs of the lower half of New York State—pfft—gone! Replaced by? Well, nothing. Before that, they shut down the Nine Mile Point plant and the Ginna plant. Why? Well, because they were not achieving zero emissions. So, had to go. Now, the Indian Point Energy Center was achieving zero emissions—it's nuclear. But nuclear wasn't popular anymore with activists, and so they sued until the politicians agreed to shut it down. Then, they phased out coal. Despite already not having replaced the nuclear. The last major coal plant, Somerset, closed in 2020. So see, a lot of this happened during the Biden administration, late Trump administration—didn't have anything to do with Trump—um, but it's really been in the last five years. Then they shut down Huntley, Cayuga, and Kinta. They retired them early; they worked just fine. They took them offline. Why? Because suffering is what being a liberal is about. Then, they shut down older gas-and-fired peaker plants. Those were used for high-demand periods. So they weren't running all the time—they were oil and gas—but they closed the gaps. Well, those obviously had to go. I mean, greenhouse gases. Meanwhile, China—or India—opens a coal-fired plant on average almost every day, which is why our manufacturing is there now and not here. So let's play it again. Now that we know how we got here.
