Targeted Direct Response Marketing: Your Message Matters
from Plantscape Business School · host Brad Miller
Episode Overview In this episode of the Plantscape Business School podcast, Brad Miller continues the series on Targeted Direct Response Marketing. Last week was about your market: your WHO. This week is about your message: your WHAT. And the big idea is simple: The message matters. Your Message Is Everywhere Your message is not just your website copy. It shows up: On the telephone In person In emails In letters In proposals In follow-up Your message is the language of your business. If your message is weak, unclear, or generic, your marketing will be too. Message-to-Market Match Different prospects care about different things. A hotel general manager may care about guest experience. A senior living executive may care about warmth, comfort, and creating a place that feels like home. A property manager may care about professional image and tenant experience. Same service. Different prospect. Different message. That is message-to-market match. Features vs. Benefits Features describe what you do. Benefits describe why it matters. For example: "We provide professional live plant service." The benefit? Your building creates an immediate perception of quality. "We maintain your plants with an unconditional guarantee." The benefit? You do not have to think about it, manage it, or worry about it. A powerful bridge from feature to benefit is: "What that means to you is…" You Are Not Selling Plants Plants are the vehicle. The benefit is the value. You are selling: A sense of arrival A warm, welcoming environment An elegant interior A perception of quality A professional image A better guest, resident, tenant, or client experience You are not selling plants. You are selling what plants do. Good Copy Starts With the Customer Strong marketing does not start with: "Here is what we do." It starts with: "What does this prospect care about?" Their building. Their people. Their pressures. Their priorities. Their desired outcome. Use their language—not just yours. Where Marketing Waste Shows Up Marketing waste happens when: Your message is generic You talk only about plants You focus on features instead of benefits You use the same message for every market If your message does not match your market, it is waste. Closing Thought Your market is your WHO. Your message is your WHAT. When your message matches your market, you waste less time, less money, and less effort—and you create better leads. Targeted direct response marketing is not about talking to everyone. It is about talking to the right person, with the right message, and asking them to act.
