Content marketing is certainly a very good way to do that, but I would say most of our listeners don't really have a clear understanding of what content marketing really means, so perhaps you can provide a brief overview on what content marketing is. James Schramko: Well, content is just stuff. That's what the web's made up of - content, whether it's text or video or audio. It's kind of like food for a human, we consume it. One of the big distinctions is who's content is it and where are you getting it from and where are you putting it. As a business owner, the typical business is probably thinking about or has a website. They say in Australia only 50% of businesses even have a website, which is pretty frightening. Let's say you're in the half that does have a website. The chances are it's probably being fairly stagnant and not updated so often and that you might, maybe participate on Facebook, certainly as a personal thing, but maybe not as a business. And that's pretty much the extent of it. So you're probably consuming content that other people put out. You might be reading a news site or you might be watching what's happening on Facebook. You might be reading some industry news sites that relate to what it is that you do, but the chances are, you're not creating the content. And that is something that should change for most people. If you're prepared to put stuff out there for people to consume, then they will actually become engaged with you, they'll find out about you, it increases your authority, it can lead to sales. So, it's a worthwhile thing to do. Just like all other traffic options, there is a cost to this, whether it's time or money; however, it's a really long-term payoff type of thing to do. It can snowball into a substantial asset. And it can give you a business that has a lot of... it's like a big flywheel that spins. You know, like a sandstone flywheel, like they show up in the stones with knives on. Once it gets spinning, it's got a lot of momentum and it works for you all the time, whether you've attended or not, which is the more mature stage that gets to. Barry: Okay. When people think about content for their website, they're typically thinking about kind of the static pages - the about us page or the contact page, etc. but what I think what we're really talking about here is specific content targeted to your ideal customer that's going to engage them and ideally try and solve their problem, rather than that kind of static website kind of pages that everybody thinks about. Is that right? James: Well, in the first place, it's even just to get their attention. So, these podcasts that you do is content and it is putting you out into the marketplace to be found and to start a discussion and to gather a listenership, an audience.
