SEO Part 2: Barry Moore:  We touched on a few of those things there. You say “compelling content” as well. Nobody really knows for sure, obviously, but do you think Google is rewarding sites that are publishing frequently as opposed to those kind of sites you mentioned before that might just be a five-page static site that never changes? John Romaine:  One thing I do know for certain is that you can essentially train the bots to come back and search your site more frequently. I know that might sound bizarre, but it’s true. If you’re publishing everyday or every second day … I’ve been doing this a long time. I’ve run sites where I’ll publish something like maybe once a day or twice a day. Very, very rarely will I publish twice a day, but at least once a day. Those publications will be indexed within minutes. I’m talking two or three minutes. Sorry, what was your question, Barry? Barry Moore:  It’s just basically, will Google reward your site, generally speaking, if you are publishing more frequently? I see a lot of people who, they put together one of those sites like you mentioned before, a five-page static site, “This is about us. This is where we are,” and they put it up there and they expect to rank well, but that information is years old and months old. It’s stale and it doesn’t change and you’re not updating the site. Google’s just probably going to look at that and say, “Look, this never changes, so there’s no point in me going back there. There’s nothing compelling about that content.” John Romaine:  Look, I’m only guessing, no one knows for sure; I don’t think it makes sense for Google to be rewarding sites that publish more frequently, but if you’re publishing more frequently, chances are that the engagement will be higher and the chances of you acquiring links will be higher because you’ve got more engagement. The more frequently you’re broadcasting your message and publishing, the more likely it is that your site’s going to be performing much better as opposed to a site that’s just sitting static. I know for certain that if you’re publishing frequently, Google, their bots hang around and they’ll be picking your stuff up really quick. I think what’s really important is that you give your content depth and you publish media-rich content, so across a broad variety of mediums, whether that be written content, photos, pictures, illustrations, diagrams, PDFs, video,
