This week’s TDIH clip is from what i believe to be theNEWDEAL's first concert in Baltimore, MD on Nov 1, 2001. I really enjoy Dan’s bass playing and style from this era - he was pushing the envelope with his sound creation, including his signature 16th-note slap-delay lines and his filter moves (as heard from 3:15 onward), plus that high-register fuzz melody at 6:15 ain’t nothin’ to sneeze at! Throughout this cut you can hear the beginnings of some of the MONSTER tones that Dan started to unleash in early 2002 - sounds that have remained an important part of the NEWDEAL arsenal to this day. There are also good examples of the interplay between bass and keyboards - both instruments improvising independent lines and melodies that, when combined, create a musical and sonic whole that is greater than the sum of its parts. Classic early-era New Deal! -Jamie
