This week’s #ThisDealInHistory is taken from our concert at Colgate University on December 1, 2007. This time period finds us further exploring and developing our transition into bolder sounds, rawer structures and a more aggressive musical approach. The first couple minutes of this clip have a nice blend of earlier-era musical ideas coupled with middle-era sounds, groove and direction. To me, this excerpt is vintage 2007 tND. The slower section at 5:31 is a good example of our stylistic evolution during these years; what might have remained a straight-up dub jam in 2004 actually gets twisted in 2007 into some quasi-funk/triphop/Philly Soul concoction… Dan consciously (or maybe unconsciously) deciding to avoid the dub route at the outset of the jam, instead opting for a very cool offbeat/upbeat groove with some great funky licks thrown in, which completely and successfully reshaped the jam into something entirely different. I also love that bass tone around 9:40 - sounds like somebody slashed Dan’s bass speaker cones -Jamie
