TEACH NO OTHER DOCTRINE (part 6) A SERIES ON THE FUNDAMENTALS OF OUR FAITH 1Timothy 1:3 As I besought thee to abide still at Ephesus, when I went into Macedonia, that thou mightiest charge some that they teach no other doctrine. 1. WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THIS SERIES? a) ~Fundamental~ - Forming a necessary base or core; of central importance. A central or primary rule or principle on which something is based. b) We will learn from the scripture the doctrines that we need to establish, proclaim, stand upon, & defend. c) Being fundamental is not a bad thing, but that word has been given a bad rap. d) These doctrines need to be based on the scripture and not man’s opinion. e) These are doctrines that we find clearly taught and defended in scripture. We do not stand on opinions from a single debatable verse. The Word of God as Our Final Authority 2. WHERE DO WE FIND IT IN SCRIPTURE a) We live by the word of God - Deut 9:9-17, Exo 34:27-28, Deut 8:3, Matt 4:1-4 – Deut 11:17-28, John 6:67-68, Titus 1:1-3, Gen 1. b) God’s word is the truth – Psalms 119:160, John 17:17, Eph 1:13, 2Tim 2:15. c) God’s words are pure & powerful – Psalm 12:6, 1119:40, Prov 30:5, Luke 4:32, Heb 4:12. d) God values his word – Rev 22:18-19, Deut 4:2, 12:32, Prov 30:6 e) The Bible is the word of God – 2Tim 3:16, 2Pet 1:19-21, Exo 17:14, Jer 3:2, 2Tim 4:13, 2Peter 3:15-16. 3. WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT? a) Rejecting God’s word results in judgment - Deut 18:17-20, Jer 11:9-11, Luke 9:26, John 12:48, 1Tim 6:3-5. b) Gods word is alive and working – Heb 4:12, Rom 1:16, 1Thess 2:13…. That is why we preach it – Titus 1:3, Rom 16:25, 1Cor 1:18, 2Tim 4:2. c) Not knowing Gods word results in ignorance – Acts 3:14-19, Rom 11:25, 1Thess 4:13, Eph 3:1-4, Rom 1:31. 4. WHY WE NEED TO DEFEND THIS a) Because it’s under attack – Rom 1:25, John 8:44, Gen 3:1-5, 2Cor 2:17 – Creation, Jesus Deity, Resurrection denied by unbelievers. b) Because it is our defense – Eph 6:17, Titus 1:9, c) It is the beginning and basis of our faith – Rom 10:17, 1Cor 15:1-4.
