Teachers must continue to develop skills-SACE call on World Teachers' Day
from AM Live on SAfm · host SABC News and Current Affairs
SAfm — The South African Council for Educators (SACE) has called on teachers to continue to develop their skills even after receiving their qualification. This comes as educators celebrate World Teachers' Day today under the theme "The right to education means the right to a qualified teacher". A report by the Centre for Development and Enterprises revealed last year that the Department of Basic Education has more than five thousand underqualified and unqualified teachers. These included those educators who only have a matric and the ones who received on-the-job training for less than three years. Many such educators entered the profession during the apartheid era. A study released earlier this year shows that only five of 22 teachers could pass basic English and Maths tests well.
