Pythagoras.Calculus. Shakespeare. Chemistry. Why do we need to study things we may never use in life? And with AI changing the jobs of tomorrow, there’s an even bigger question: is school making us life ready or just exam ready? With 981,000 young people in the UK currently not in education, employment or training,the question is more pertinent than ever. At Our Happy Place, four 16-18-year-olds from our first cohort take their questions to Rev Steve Chalke MBE, founder of Oasis Charitable Trust. Having established a network of more than 50 primary and secondary schools across the UK, Steve has spent decades working with young people and has been a vocal advocatefor a major rethink of education, challenging an exam-dominated system and arguing for different ways of learning, greater recognition of neurodiversity, practical skills and better preparation for life and work.
