ElderDog Canada is a national, not-for-profit charity dedicated to supporting older people, senior dogs, and the important relationship they enjoy. Headquartered in Nova Scotia and with chapters (Pawds) in eight provinces, more than 3500 volunteers carry out the work of ElderDog. Our no-fee services include providing older adults in-home assistance with basic dog care, finding new homes for older dogs who have lost their human due to illness, death, or relocation, helping seniors find a mature canine companion to “grow old with,” and supporting research and educating the public about the important role of dogs in seniors’ lives. I created ElderDog following the sudden death of my brother and my subsequent adoption of his old and ill Chocolate Lab, Mr. Brown. My brother’s death was a poignant reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of using time and energy to make a positive difference. My adoption of and care for Mr. Brown raised my awareness of a broader need for attention to the care of older dogs who lose their human companion. This awareness, combined with recognition from a decade-long program of research on seniors and caregiving, that dogs play an important role in seniors’ health and well-being and that that relationship needs support. My volunteer experience with my dog, Tattoo, in animal-assisted therapy in long-term and palliative care, also taught me a lot about dogs' important role in end-of-life care. These three experiences inspired me to create ElderDog Canada to support the relationship between older adults and their dogs. Since the beginning of operations in 2012, and with the dedication of many volunteers who believe in all that ElderDog stands for and does, ElderDog Canada has grown exponentially with 37 Pawds (our name for chapters) across Canada. I am deeply invested and involved in every aspect of the organization, including the national leadership of ElderDog, which is informed by my background as an adult educator. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/misslizsteatimes/messageBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/teatime-with-miss-liz--5511005/support.
