Technical Colleges

from African Dialogue · host Channel Africa

In November last year the Department of Higher Education and Training warned that Public technical and vocational education and training (TVET) colleges will soon lose part of their state funding, amounting to millions, due to poor pass rates. This could see underperforming colleges cut their student numbers and lose out on funds to improve infrastructure and research. Meanwhile as the department tries to improve the image of tvet colleges, there is a perception in society that tvet colleges are less desirable than universities. So what has happened to tvet colleges? We are joined by: • Professor Ahmed Bawa is the CEO of Universities South Africa • Klaas Mohlatlole is the Chairperson of labour at the Professional Educators Union
