Ted Budd, Cheri Beasley win Senate primaries, Madison Cawthorn loses House race

from WCNC Charlotte To Go · host WCNC Charlotte

The North Carolina race for U.S. Senate is down to two candidates, as Republican Ted Budd and Democrat Cheri Beasley won their respective primaries Tuesday. Budd, who was endorsed by former President Donald Trump, cruised to victory over former Gov. Pat McCrory and U.S. Rep. Mark Walker, while Beasley won in a landslide after her top competitor dropped out in December. Budd won the 14-candidate Republican primary over former Gov. Pat McCrory and U.S. Rep. Mark Walker, while Beasley had entered Tuesday as the front-runner for the Democratic nomination, which 11 people sought. Current GOP U.S. Sen. Richard Burr is retiring.Their election victories came as North Carolina voters whittled down Democratic and Republican candidates seeking to serve on Capitol Hill, in the General Assembly and on the judicial bench.Trump, who narrowly won the state's electoral votes in 2016 and 2020, gave his endorsement to Budd nearly a year ago. Budd benefitted from millions of dollars spent by the Club for Growth Action super PAC that was used to praise him and brand McCrory as too liberal.Richard DeVayne and Chloe Leshner join Wake Up Charlotte To Go to break down victory speeches from both candidates and we hear from Pat McCrory after his defeat. Ben Thompson and Sarah French break down several key local races, including Patrick Cannon's unsuccessful bid to get on November's ballot. INTERACTIVE MAP: North Carolina primary election results
