Teen Arrested in Bitcoin Heist, Women Charged for Misinformation and Limits of Self Defence

According to investigators, the theft involved a SIM swap attack that allowed the suspect to gain access to the victim’s accounts and cryptocurrency. But an unusual online purchase would ultimately help authorities track the case back to the suspect: some of the stolen cryptocurrency was allegedly used to buy a rare username in the gaming community. The investigation brought together Hamilton Police, the FBI, and the U.S. Secret Service, turning the case into a remarkable example of how digital crimes can cross international borders—and how even a small online transaction can leave a trail for investigators.
