Telangana Was Announced in 2009… So Why Did It Take 5 Years?

Following the announcement, several MLAs from the Andhra region resigned, creating instability in the legislative framework required for state bifurcation.Under Article 3 of the Indian Constitution, Parliament has the authority to create new states, but the process involves consultation with the state assembly. The political dynamics between regions, combined with majority representation from Andhra, added complexity to the situation.To address the concerns of both regions, the government formed the Sri Krishna Committee, which spent a year gathering inputs from stakeholders, including public representatives and citizens. The committee submitted its report in 2010, outlining multiple possible solutions rather than a direct recommendation.What followed were years of negotiations, political discussions, and stakeholder consultations.In July 2013, the Congress Working Committee passed a resolution supporting the creation of Telangana.
