Tell City, IN - Little Petey Shakes Things Up at the Playground

from Small Town News · host Small Town News

Welcome to Tell City, Indiana, where you can taste the good life!  The town was founded in 1858 by a group of Swiss-German immigrants who wanted to obtain affordable homesteads where the inhabitants could live in harmony.  The town was initially named Helvetia, but was soon changed to Tell City to make the name easier to pronounce for English-speaking people.  Legendary Swiss hero William Tell was the inspiration for the town's new name.  The town is located on the Ohio River and once had a steamboat named after it.  Built in 1889, the steamboat "Tell City" carried passengers and freight along the river until is sank in Little Hocking, Ohio in 1917.  Only the pilothouse was salvaged, and was converted into a gazebo overlooking the river.  It was donated to the Ohio River Museum in 1976 by the owners.  Tell City is home to Schweizer Fest, one of Indiana's longest running community festivals.  The festival started as a centennial celebration of the founding of the town and was so successful that it has continued as an annual event.  The festival will be held from August 10th through the 13th this year.  We hope you enjoy our trip to Tell City!Small Town News--whose headline is it, anyway? @SmallTownNewsImprov
