Tennessee's 2023 Outlook And How The Volunteers Can Compete For The SEC | Tennessee Football 2023

The Tennessee Volunteers are coming off of an 11-2 season with a No.6 finish in the AP Bowl (also known as their best season in two decades). Josh Heupel ran a nearly unstoppable offense with quarterback Hendon Hooker and wide receivers Jalin Hyatt and Cedric Tillman, as Tennessee scored 46.1 points per game last year. Despite all of those players leaving, along with 1st round offensive tackle Darnell Wright, I expect the Volunteers to once again boast the SEC's best-scoring offense. When it comes to having a balanced attack and overall efficiency, I think Georgia will challenge the volunteers offensively, but Joe Milton will sling the ball downfield to score the most points per game out of any SEC team. I don't think Tennessee will win the SEC East this season, but they will still win eight, nine, or ten regular season games and be in the top half of the conference. There are questions about the defense and offensive line, especially the secondary, where 63 points were given up to South Carolina quarterback Spencer Rattler and the unit finished outside of the Top 100 in yards allowed per game and outside of the Top 50 in defensive passer efficiency. Center Cooper Mays returns after a great 2022 campaign, but the remainder of the projected four starters play at a significant level behind Mays, so I think this room takes a step back, leading Tennessee to lean more on quarterback Joe Milton and wide receivers Squirrel White and Ramel Keyton. Overall, the Volunteers will be a Top 20 team this season with a near-elite offense and an average defense. If Josh Heupel wants to compete for the SEC consistently, he must recruit at a Top 10 level year after year and continue to develop great quarterbacks.
