“There was also a prophet, Anna, [who] never left the temple but worshipped night and day, fasting and praying. Coming up to Mary, Joseph and the child, at that very moment, she gave thanks to God. and spoke about the child to all who were looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem.” (Luke 2:36–38) Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. (Matthew 6:5-7) “When you fast, do not look sombre as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full.
