In which Tess, weary and reluctant, accompanies Alec d’Urberville on a prolonged and fog-enveloped ride that leads them far from familiar paths, amid the ancient woodlands of The Chase. She finds herself in a state of uneasy trust and silent reflection as Alec departs to ascertain their bearings, leaving her alone in the gathering darkness wrapped in his coat and her thoughts.
