Texas RioGrande Legal Aid to host Tax Q&A

HARLINGEN, Texas - In his regular podcast with The Rio Grande Guardian, Rev Torres reminds taxpayers that this year’s filing deadline is July 15.Torres is part of the Texas Taxpayer Assistance Project, a division of Texas RioGrande Legal Aid (TRLA).To help taxpayers get their income-tax questions answered, TRLA is holding a Facebook Live event on July 13 at 12:00 p.m. The livestream will feature staff with the Texas Taxpayer Assistance Project, with presentations in English and Spanish. The tax project provides free legal help on federal income tax matters to low-income Texans in the 68 counties TRLA serves. Tax project staff will also discuss the new deadline for non-tax-filers to register for a stimulus payment from the federal government under the CARES Act. An individual who hasn’t filed a 2019 federal income tax return may be eligible to use the free non-filers tool on IRS.gov, which is available in English and Spanish. The event will also address tax questions such as: What happens if I can’t file my taxes by the July 15 deadline? How do I obtain an extension on the payment of taxes? My income has declined, and I can’t afford to make tax payments. What are my options? What are my options if I owe the IRS for taxes not paid in previous years? I didn’t work, or worked very little, in 2019.
