Thaçi Convicted on War Crimes | Calgary News

Former Kosovo president Hashim Thaçi has been sentenced to 25 years for war crimes including murder and torture, convicted by a European Union-backed court for orchestrating atrocities during Kosovo’s 1998-99 independence war. Despite resigning nearly six years ago to face trial, Thaçi and three other KLA leaders were found guilty of targeting civilians and political foes—often for simply having Serbian ties—while being acquitted on six crimes against humanity charges. The verdict, met with nationwide shock and outrage in Kosovo where the defendants are seen as national heroes, has sparked massive protests and condemnation from officials. Prosecutors sought 45 years; co-defendants received 13-25 years. Thaçi, who can appeal, also faces a separate trial for witness intimidation later this month.
