Welcome to the Tweep Trends podcast. Hey, Evette, what's trending today? Hey, I'm Evette. Hey, girl.
And you are tuned in to Tweep Trends. It's the quickest way to find out what's trending today. Hey, I know. I didn't put an episode out yesterday, but it was Thanksgiving.
So let's talk about it today, as well as thankful versus grateful. Let's get started. Hey, so I hope you had a great Thanksgiving yesterday. I know that I did.
I got to spend it with my husband, my daughter, my mom, and sister, my brother and sister-in-law, and their beautiful little daughter. And we just had a really good time. The food was good. The company was good.
And with all of that good stuff going on, all of that Thanksgiving goodness, I just did not have time to stop and record an episode. And I should have maybe prepared ahead of time, planned, recorded the night before. I could have done a bunch of things, but I didn't. And so I apologize.
I'm sorry that I left you with no word for yesterday. However, hopefully your date was just as jam-packed and just as fun that you wouldn't have had a chance to sit and listen anyway. So hopefully it's working out for all of us and you're getting this extra little, I don't want to call it a jam, but you're getting this extra podcast goodness on a Friday where you normally wouldn't get it. And if you're out in the streets doing your Black Friday shopping, then here's a little something for you to listen to while you go from store to store.
Now that Thanksgiving is in the rearview mirror, today being Black Friday, everybody that is all about hitting the stores and getting all those bargains, you've probably been out for hours now. You're probably at home already. You already got all the big ticket items that you were looking for. Hopefully you're not using this time as a selfish time period to say you need a bigger television or you need something else, because nine times out of ten, we don't need for anything.
We want lots of stuff, but there's not a whole lot that we actually need. The people out there that are in need, they're all over the place and we could be doing great things in their lives, but to go and use Black Friday to buy a bunch of stuff for yourself, I don't know that that's the purpose for Black Friday and Cyber Monday and small business Saturday and all of that good stuff, right? So when you think about doing this Black Friday shopping, hopefully you're thinking about somebody else. You're getting your holiday shopping done.
If you exchange gifts for Christmas or if you just buy things for people, just willy nilly, hopefully you're using this opportunity to save a few coins because everybody wants to have a little bit of a savings and not go completely broke wanting to do things for other people. Now there are people that go above and beyond and put themselves in bad positions because they want to give the best gifts and whatnot, but sometimes it's not even about giving a gift. It could be something as simple as giving a kind word or giving up your time, you know, because honestly and truthfully, time is worth something because you can't get it back. It's a non-renewable resource.
You don't know how much of it you actually have to go through, so by giving your time to somebody, that says a lot. And so with all of this in mind, I had been listening to this podcast recently. It's called When Make Give, and in a particular episode that I was listening to, these two guys, Chad and Bob, they were talking about the difference between being thankful and being grateful. And it's a bigger conversation than what I thought it was because when I looked it up online, there were so many resources to look at where people were talking about the difference between thankfulness and gratefulness.
And unfortunately, I think a lot of people throw it both in the words in the same hat and they say, you know what, if you look them up in the dictionary, it's going to say that one is a synonym of the other. And so that basically you can use these words interchangeably. But when you look at it, you know, under a microscope, you can see that there is a difference. And maybe we shouldn't use them interchangeably.
By definition, grateful is feeling or showing appreciation for something done or received. Whereas the definition for thankful is feeling pleased and relieved. So pretty much both grateful and thankful are positive feelings, and both grateful and thankful are triggered by some event. However, the difference between the two is that grateful is an outward thing and thankful is internal.
To be thankful, that's generated from within you. You are making the decision to be thankful. So in a situation like this, I have a sister in law or soon to be sister in law. She's pregnant.
She was hoping that she was going to be having a boy. They did a gender reveal, found out she was having a girl. She was feeling some type of way about it. And someone said to her, you know, just be thankful that you got pregnant because she's experienced issues with fertility.
And therefore, this person was trying to help her change her mindset to be like, you know, just be thankful, meaning you, within yourself, find a way to be happy about this because you got pregnant in the first place. You didn't have to go to the fertility clinic to have them assist you. Now, you could be grateful to the people at the fertility clinic if you had to go there and get assistance with getting pregnant. And then when that child is born, you may be grateful, she'll gratitude towards the fertility clinic because you feel that they helped you to then make something happen.
It was because of their expertise and their knowledge that you were able to conceive. So that was something that was done for you or received from some other place. Now, in some cases, it gets a little cloudy because let's say there was a car accident and you walked away from it without a scratch whereas the car is completely totaled. Well, you may be feeling pleased or relieved that you were able to walk away from that accident.
You were able to come out of that car, unscratched. However, if you believe in a higher power, then you may be grateful to that higher power for protecting you so that you would be able to walk away from that accident. So in that particular situation, there's thankfulness and gratefulness all rolled up into one because of the different angles that you're looking at it. So once again, long story short, they're both good things, but one is self-generated.
If you choose to be thankful, then you're going to be able to live a happier life. You're going to be able to just experience more joy, more success, more happiness in your life because you're choosing to be pleased with what you have or be relieved because of whatever the situation is. Whereas gratefulness is more of being indebted to somebody, so to speak, where somebody did something for you and you now have that emotion and feeling towards them. So that's external.
You can't control the gratefulness, but you can choose to be thankful. That's my two cents on it. You may or may not agree with me. And hey, I'd love to hear your take on the difference between grateful and thankful.
Do you think we can just use these words interchangeably or is there a real difference? I am pleased and relieved that I was able to get today's episode out to you, although I did not get an episode out to yesterday. Yes, I dropped the ball, but I am choosing to be thankful for the opportunity to be able to get it right today. Now, thank you so much for listening.
I am grateful to you, and I want to show some gratitude. So what am I going to do? I want to know what it is that you want us to talk about. Are there topics that you're just itching for me to talk about?
Well, the only way I'm going to know to talk about it is if you let me know. So do me a favor. Enjoy Black Friday, small business Saturday, Sunday, cyber Monday. Enjoy all of those opportunities that you get to do some shopping, but make sure that you were shopping not just for self, but you were also shopping for those people out there that you appreciate.
And this is the way that you want to show that appreciation. Okay, have a good one and I'll see you guys back here again on Tuesday.
