Thanksgiving

from St Mark Sermons Hosted by St Mark Coptic Orthodox Church

This sermon, delivered on a Thanksgiving weekend, centers on three women from that Sunday's readings who were each given negative labels by others but received healing and a new identity through their bold encounters with Jesus. The sinful woman who anoints Jesus's feet is called a "Seeker" because she actively sought out Jesus despite social judgment. The woman with the issue of blood is called a "Struggler" because she pushed through a crowd and took personal responsibility for reaching Jesus. The Canaanite woman is called a "Star" or "Striver" because she refused to be turned away by Jesus's challenging words, persisting in faith until she received salvation for her daughter. Each woman "crashed a party" she wasn't invited to, and their boldness overturned the labels society had placed on them. Fr Thomas urges us to imitate these women: to seek God without worrying what others think, to struggle and take responsibility in prayer and repentance, and to strive persistently.
