I’m the editor of my mother’s writings about the history and rich culture of the places she lived, and the people she knew and loved. New episodes will be uploaded every week until mid-January 2021. In 1945, after years in England and the USA, Ella returned to Newfoundland to live, a single mother with two small boys. Using her maiden name, she began to write for newspapers and magazines and to read for radio stories about the places and people she met, recapturing some of the forgotten men and women of Newfoundland’s past. Over the next three decades, her voice became known across Canada through her many broadcasts on the CBC. When she died, she left behind a confused mass of undated manuscripts and notes, which I have now arranged and edited. Whilst noting the developments in distillation methods and the refining of the finest spirit on Earth, it considers how whisky has been deeply entrenched in the lives of different people. Therefore, this is also an interpretation of the social and political history of countries such as Scotland. I really like whisky, and I really like history, so I figured I will try and incorporate the two into a podcast. The format for the episodes is to consider the history of whisky chronologically within each respective geographical region, although these will inevitably cross over into other areas in parts. This is why we are first focusing on Scottish Malt, and as we progress through time we will consider alternative forms of whiskies, such as American Bourbon and Rye whiskies, as well as Japan’s heritage, to name a few examples.
