"That's How the Light Gets In" by Stephen Deatherage
from West Hills Friends · host West Hills Friends
For the message, Stephen read from Genesis 1 and Matthew 27. He also read from the lyrics of Leonard Cohen’s "Anthem." The cross is a symbol of Roman power. Stephen told a fable about Caesar; The Emperor stepped through time and space, and found himself in contemporary Portland. Caesar saw an ornate building on the Park Blocks, topped by a crucifix. Caesar was amazed by how completely people had embraced this symbol of Rome’s hegemony. However, a caretaker explained that the Christian cross is actually a symbol of how God uses brokenness to "let the Light in." Stephen asked, "Where are the 'cracks' in your life that bring new opportunities for the Light to get in?"
