That's the thing about Avatar

from The Pod Charles Cinecast · host The Prince Charles Cinema

This week on The Pod Charles Cinecast, presented by The Prince Charles Cinema, our hosts Jonathan Foster and Fil Freitas spend the final episode of 2022 trying to figure out if Pandora is a place on Earth. When not adjusting for inflation, James Cameron's sci-fi epic AVATAR is the most successful movie of all-time. Selling nearly $3 billion worth of tickets, it is a film that was seen by just about everyone when it came out in 2009. The film boasted groundbreaking visual effects, with unseen CGI techniques and improvements in 3D technology. When it came out, it seemed everyone had Avatar fever. And then... it just fizzled out. No vast marketing empire of toys, video games, books, shows, cartoon tie-ins, or quick sequels. Sure, some of those things might have happened, but does anyone remember them? That's the thing about Avatar...In this episode, we toss aside our usual "how this film got from point A to point B" formula, as we were severely distracted by how James Cameron's Avatar never really made more of an impact on pop culture, aside from the fact it tops the all-time box office and is "Dances with Wolves in Space". Yet, somehow (because it made a lot of money, duh) it gets a sequel no one asked for 13 years later.Expect some silly facts, weird James Cameron quotes, unoriginal script lawsuits, and a very fun Avatar-themed take on Phoebe Bridger's "Savoir Complex" in this very special episode to close out the year. Oh, and we totally ask the big question: "Why do the Na'vi have tits?"We hope you all had a very Merry Christmas, and you have the Happiest of New Years! See you all in 2023!If you enjoy the podcast, leave a Rating and Review!
