I'm Sean Fennessey. I'm Amanda Dobbins. And this is a big picture of a conversation show about summertime. Exciting episode.
We're going to be counting down our most anticipated summer movies of 2024. But there's so much going on in the world of movies, and we have so much news to dig into. Some of it is very exciting. Some of it is absolutely pulverizing.
Actually, before we start, I wanted to mention, you know, we're doing a fun event this Sunday. We sure are. At the Academy Museum. Why are you announcing it now?
Tickets are sold out. Well, because I just think it's a cool flight. It's very exciting. Yeah.
We just did a pre-production meeting about this event that we're doing. We're participating. It's a movie trivia at the Academy Museum here in Los Angeles. And, uh, goddammit, I love movie trivia.
We got to write our own round of movie trivia, and then we were fact-checked by the Academy librarians, which is, like, the greatest honor that I've ever had in my entire life. Also, I don't want to spoil any of the questions, but I was very nervous. As soon as we got on the call, and the lovely people at the Academy were like, yes, so we had, like, the full librarians go through it. And I was like, oh, god, they're really going to be mad about some of my questions.
And they made it through. They were modest changes. I think we did a good job in our question, right? Yeah.
We did up our duties. Our category is big-picture favorites. Some classics of this show. But yeah, we're really excited to participate.
If you're coming out, can't wait to see you. If you're not, maybe next time. You know, maybe we'll do more. I'm available for all L.A.
area movie trivia events that pay a million dollars. That's the only thing you're available for. L.A. area movie trivia.
Are you screening a film? Are you doing movie trivia? Or will you watch my three-year-old? Those are the three things that I'm available for.
Otherwise, I'm not available. Wow, she is almost three. I know, we're rounding out. That's really intense.
We're heading towards three-nature in a profound way. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I know, but that's emotional for me that she's turning three. I imagine how I feel.
I do, but I'm just saying. I can have my own moment. It's exciting. I was thinking, actually, next year at this time, if we were to do something like this, she could come.
There would be no nap. It would be perfectly fine for her to just come over there. Oh, you're already going to give up that nap? We're getting close, yeah.
It's just about that time. Three and a half, maybe, is my ghost. I'm going to let it ride forever, as long as I can. I don't blame you.
A friend of ours was telling me she's a three-year-old who's still just fully in the crib, and that's great. That sounds nice. That's what I plan to do for as long as I can. We're still in the crib, but I don't know for how much longer.
I've got a very independent-minded child, as you know. Great. Anywho, speaking of independent-minded, the worst thing that ever happened yesterday... So you didn't have a heads up?
I had no heads up. I did not know this was happening. I have gotten intermittent information about Quentin Tarantino's 10th film over the course of the last year or so. I had heard a variety of things about this project in that time, some of which was reported took me by surprise.
I was very taken by surprise when the news came out yesterday in a report by Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter that, in fact, the movie critic, what was purported to be the 10th and final film from Quentin Tarantino, is now not happening. It has been shelved by Quentin. He is moving on to another project. Now, this is a little bit of a tangled web, and there's a lot of rumor and reporting colliding together, some revelations yesterday.
For anybody who wasn't really up on this, if you listen to the show, you probably were, but if you weren't really up on this, this movie was reportedly going to be... It was reported rumored to be about Jim Sheldon, who was a movie critic in the 1970s for a porno rat called The Hollywood Press. And when the rumors first started coming out, it was like, oh, this could be Paul Walter Hauser, there was seemingly a fake rumor that the comedian Shane Gillis was going to be involved at one point, and then all of a sudden, Brad Pitt was getting involved in this project, and then I heard a Tom Cruise rumor getting involved in this project, I don't know how true any of that is, and then the movie started moving... We all heard a Tom Cruise rumor.
Film updates are circulating just, like, frequently. And, you know, the Tom Cruise, Quentin Tarantino thing is something we've all wanted for a long time, and the movie just started to seemingly be morphing in front of our eyes. Also, Paul Schrader kind of squealed when he revealed that Quentin would be remaking a sequence from the film that he had written, Rolling Thunder, the great William DeVay movie that actually Chris Ryan drafted in a 1977 draft. So there's just all this stuff about this movie.
It was going to start in 2024. No, actually, it's going to be 2025. There were LA tax breaks involved. And then now it's just gone.
It's just off this late, and he's starting over again, reportedly. Haven't talked to Quentin. I don't know what's going on. I'm leaving alone, but this sucks.
So you receive this as pure defeat? Well, I mean, presumably, he'll make another film. Yeah. I will say this.
Every single time I've ever had the good fortune to talk to him, every time, I've said, you've got to drop this 10 movies thing. Sure. Like, I really, I assure you, there are literally millions of people who would be more than happy to have your 13th film just be okay, and it not really be a problem. He's still a young guy.
And this is related to other news that we have to talk to today. That's all very true. Like, we can go into our 70s now, even our 80s, and be great. So in the short term, it's annoying.
In the long term, it'll be fine. Some people seem to think the movie might have been too modest a final film for him. I would argue that Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is, like, as perfect a movie as you could have ended on, and he did it in 9th. So he's in a tricky spot with the 10 movies.
Have you announced the 10th before Once Upon a Time in Hollywood? He had been saying for a long time that this is something he wanted. I think it was 2012 when he first publicly discussed this strategy. So, you know, it just means that 2025 is a little less amazing than it was going to be.
It's still going to have new PTA and IMAX, Jordan Peele, you know, a number of other James Gunn's Superman, I'm sure you're very excited about. I thought some dumb photo of all of them, like, reading Superman comics. Just release a fucking movie, you know? I don't think it's going to be good.
But, like, how many updates do I have to get from James Gunn? I think it's going to be a long run here. I think you've got about 14 months. It has been a tremendously long run of a man just posting through it.
Do you follow him on Fred's? Of course not. Okay. Does that mean that I still, that I don't see any of the stuff?
No, it doesn't, because Fred's is just shoving whatever in. But I only look at the following tab on Fred's. Do you think that Quentin's next movie should be a massive epic, or is it better if it's a more intimate film? Honestly, I think Quentin should do whatever the fuck he wants, including only making 10 movies, if that's what he feels like doing.
Sure. And I've received some of this, you know, I understand that movies, in a lot of ways, are just bending the world circumstances to you, and if you can't get them the way you want them, it doesn't happen. But also, maybe it's just like, I don't know, I don't want to do this one anymore. And that's cool with me, you know?
Also, sometimes, in creative pursuits, you get down the road with something, and then you're like, I don't know if this is totally there. Imagine how I feel about the show now. We're eight years in here. Think about how many of the films we watch, where there was definitely a day when everyone was like, no, we don't got this, but we just got to keep going.
It's like 90% of them. So, it's okay. I think that's a great insight, and I'm sure that that contributed to it. You know, the confusing thing about this story was that the movie kind of morphed into like a Cliff Booth movie, which I had no idea that that had happened, Brad Pitt's character from Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
That, to me, was something, I'm not sure that I needed another Cliff Booth movie, so I was kind of relieved. The movie critic, in a film set, in a set, like, scuzzy 70s Hollywood, was very appealing to me, because Quentin really, I mean, maybe nobody on Earth understands that milieu better than him, so that would have been cool. Another Cliff Booth movie, honestly, go read the novelization of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. There's a ton of awesome Cliff Booth stuff in that.
And that does also speak to the, if it's going to be his last movie, I understand, but if you were just making movies, and this were just, like, a way to spend a summer, that would be cool. Yeah, you can imagine that. So, that's the same thing, I get it, but again, do what you want. So, Gwen doesn't have a movie.
It sounds like maybe, and I'm not sure how much I want to believe this story, but maybe Martin Scorsese has two movies happening. Sure. The first of which is, this is not the first time we've heard about this, but Martin Scorsese has long thought about making a biopic of Frank Sinatra's life, and the news that came out was that Leo, who had long been rumored to play Sinatra, would be joined by Jennifer Lawrence, who would lay a gardener, of course, famously one of Sinatra's paramours. I think this is a great idea, but I also hate music biopics.
And so, I think the way to frame the idea, and I'm borrowing this, Neil Batterer is a critic who framed this in a review of The Irishman a number of years ago, where he said that there is a trilogy of critical gangster movies in the Martin Scorsese story. You know, it's obviously, it's Goodfellas, it's Casino, and it's The Irishman. In Goodfellas, it's like New York and the industrialization of organized crime. In Casino, it's the expansion into Las Vegas, and then in The Irishman, it's the expansion into unions and the federal government.
You could look at Gangs of New York as kind of the prologue to this story, and then you look at a Sinatra story as the infiltration of the entertainment industry, that Sinatra has ties to the mafia, that you have this tapestry, this mosaic of stories that are all kind of interconnected, the same theme, the same big idea, and this would be the final, this would be the conclusion to this story. Yeah. But a music biopics, and it does that. I mean, as soon as you're casting Jennifer Lawrence as Eva Gardner, which I think is maybe better casting than Leo as Frank, which we can come back to, but that is just aviator vibes all over again, you know, and I love Lawrence Scorsese.
That's a good movie. It's okay. It's just okay. I mean, it's funny for the means of you at the end, but it's just like, it's...
In the context of his filmography, it's okay. Yeah. It's a bad movie. In a normal movie, you're like, it's a bad movie.
But we are on, I don't want to say borrowed time, but we're reaching this. We're in the red zone. We're on a nine yard line here. Yeah.
We got to get in the end zone. So the reception of this news, the obvious joke, and one that's pretty good is like, you really got to cast Ronan Farrow as Sinatra's son. I mean, as Sinatra, if you guys haven't seen that photo, obviously there are like long held rumors that I have, like, this is just a rumor. Okay.
You're not breaking this news. I'm not breaking this. You've got the DNA. But that Ronan Farrow is actually Mia Farrow's son with Frank Sinatra, and there's some compelling side-by-side photo evidence.
The bear striking was in this, yeah. I saw someone else suggest Mike Feist as Dan Sinatra, and I was like, oh. Well, he has something that Leo does not have, which is that... That's just me.
It's coming for you. Be careful. I know. He does have you.
No, Mike Feist, which we'll discuss when we talk about Challengers, is just a wispy little man. He's just a skinny little boy. He was Sinatra for a really long time. My point is that Sinatra was a rail.
That was his whole thing, was that he was a skinny guy with his big head and his incredible voice. And Leo is a little bit older, a little bit thicker. And you know, like, I've met Leo. He's a sturdy, tall guy.
You know, he's not small. Late-phase Sinatra. He would be a better fit. Yeah, but he's too tall, though.
But then, now we're just into the, you know, music biopic territory. Frank and Ava Gardner, though, that's 50s, 60s. So there's an incredible James Kaplan biography of Frank Sinatra called The Voice, which spans his entire life. But the middle of that book is, like, the greatest non-fiction celebrity biography I've ever read, because his life was just so fascinating from, you know, his rise and his fall and everything that's sort of, like, fake-charted in The Godfather.
I would love it if they just focused on a narrow period of time. Obviously, I prefer those kinds of music biopics. I'm just a little dubious about this one, because, like, no studio attached, no production and the two actors who are, who are the two actors who are rumored to play Jesus? Well, I thought that they're both attached to the film in some way, but we're just not sure who's playing Jesus.
Is this, like, a who's Jesus, who's Judas situation? Well, that's where the mind goes, with a very, very rudimentary understanding of the Bible, as we have. But imagine the Bible pods we will do in the run-up to Scorsese's Jesus. Okay, so the two guys in the mix, Andrew Garfield and Miles Teller.
I mean, just, this is my Super Bowl, this is remarkable, but these two beautiful boys who have occupied a fascinating place in our minds in the last 10 years as actors, who I would say for both of them, as much as I love them, I love the individual movies they've made. Neither of them has ever quite gotten there for me. They've never quite had their thing, where I'm like, you did it, you made it. They never quite had their Born on the Fourth of July, they never quite had their, I don't know, what is the moment when Pitt, you were like, Pitt, realized Pitt, Ocean's Eleven, maybe, something like that.
They've done good movies, they've done interesting work, they both seem a little eccentric in different ways, Miles Teller a little more growey, Andrew Garfield a little bit more spiritual, a little weirder. Dating a professional witch? Yeah, so explain that to me. So, according to the tabloids, that's a title that she's given herself, a self-reclaimed spiritual witch.
I looked at her website, and it's, you know, spiritual healing, tarot cards, counseling, that sort of thing. She was photographed with Andrew Garfield on a double date at Nobu Malibu with Bo Burnham and Phoebe Richards. I see. So, that was a CMBC situation.
So, that's what Andrew Garfield's up to. I just, it's a rich tapestry. Is that spawned for wicked? Like, what does that mean?
A professional, I think she's reading tarot cards and engaging in the, like, maybe not the supernatural, but the otherworldly, and bringing it to this life, and helping people make decisions accordingly. Did you know that there's a horror film coming out on May 3rd called Tarot? I did, I saw a trailer for it. Should I go see Abigail?
I mean, it looks kind of funny. Do you know what the premise is? It's a little girl named Alice who has a doll. Abigail, yes.
Oh, Abigail. Is the doll named Alice? You're thinking of Imaginary. Oh, okay.
So, which one's Abigail? Okay. Imaginary is the one with a little girl who has a stuffed bear. That one I am absolutely seeing.
The minute it comes out. It is out. It is out for six weeks. How did you tell me?
I went through a screening. It's not very good. But when the bear's on the, is the bear on a Roomba, or does it just look like he's on a Roomba coming to get you? It's just sliding on the ground.
It's just moving on its own. Okay. I guess that's more spooky than on a Roomba, but the taking control of a Roomba coming to get you is a good idea. Have they put that in a horror film yet?
Well, it sounds like you've, maybe it would be called like Boomba. Do you still have a Roomba? I do have a Roomba, but we never use it. Yeah.
But I mean, just imagine it just like breaks out of the closet. A killer Roomba. Yeah. This is why you're not on any horror pods.
No, that's a good idea. I think a house is going to kill you where everything is coming to life is a great idea. Yeah, because like the Roomba is definitely a funny part of it. And maybe there's like a cat or a baby like trapped on the Roomba, you know?
You think they're a blonde house executive listening right now, furiously taking notes. Haunted Roomba. I mean, we had a haunted swimming pool movie this year, and I thought it was fun. That's why I don't have any smart house features.
That's imaginary. Abigail? Well, it's actually not because of spookiness, but because I think like hackers are going to take over the house. You think hackers are going to take over your Roomba?
Because you don't believe in the cloud. Or, yeah, don't believe in the cloud. No facial recognition on your phone. No cookies.
No cookies. Don't believe in the cloud. And nothing in my house that is like Wi-Fi enabled is connected to Wi-Fi. What about the fact that your husband has all this stuff?
But he doesn't believe in either. You know, he's the one with the tape on the camera, on his camera. But that was why I was figuring out Zach. But he, don't you remember when he went to Vegas for a week and then went to the hacker conference and was like, they're spying on us?
That was like 13 years ago. He was early. I thought you were going to tell you something. When I was texting with your husband last night, and I was like, we are overdue for Zach CR and Sean go to Vegas together.
And then I started thinking, it's actually a family trip. We're all going. Do they have kids clubs for two-year-olds in Vegas? Yeah, they let them gamble.
Well, no, there's pools and stuff. There's plenty of kids to do. It'll be fine. But so, you know how at this point your thermostat can be like Wi-Fi enabled?
Yes, yes. None of that shit is stuck out. Primarily because we don't have an S. I don't have an S either.
Yeah, you can have that. Yeah, but I don't. Purposely. Any of these other things.
I'm sure that when the apocalypse comes, you'll be able to avoid it because of all these choices. It's really good thinking on your part. Me over here, I exclusively tweet from my Samsung refrigerator, so I've leaned in. Maybe you'll be the leader of the revolution when the apocalypse does come because you're so hooked up.
You're so on my side. You've been calling me Gen Z for long enough. You're already not going to want to help. So what's Abigail?
If it's not. I'm so reluctant to talk about this too much. Okay, so I'm just going to say it. If you don't hear anything about Abigail, just fast forward two minutes, but there were two potential features for Abigail.
There was one, the one where we knew nothing about this movie, and it was one of the coolest reveals in a long time in movies. And then there's two of the way that the movie was marketed. So let's start with the first one. The movie, it starts out as a crime thriller abduction movie where a group of six criminals, all of whom fit these archetypal molds where you've got a hacker, you've got the muscle, you've got a wheel man, you've got the strategist, you've got the ex-cop who is a little bit untrustworthy, are all going to abduct a 12-year-old girl who is a ballerina because her father is worth millions of dollars.
They're going to take her, abduct her, and put her in an old house. and keep her for 24 hours until they can get the money the movie goes on and for the first hour of the film you're like this is just an abduction crime thriller and it's Melissa Barrera and Dan Stevens and um is he the millionaire dad? he is not he is actually a very slimy ex-cop and you know a handful of you know Kevin Durant is the muscle there's like Catherine Newton you know the young actress from the An-Man films and they're all part of this ragtag group and the young girl says something very menacing to Dan Stevens at one point she's gonna be like I'm sorry about what's going to happen to you and you're like what? what's going on here?
and then like I said about an hour in it becomes clear that Abigail is a vampire and that she's a vampire who is attacking them in this house and why she's attacking them is kind of explained in the movie now I think that the movie was written to not reveal that but then the marketing for the movie reveals that she's a vampire if you watch the trailer for Abigail you know that she's a vampire so it's a tough thing because you could tell that they wouldn't be able to sell the movie just as like an abduction thriller with like the Star of Screen 6 but by giving it away the whole time you're watching the movie you're just waiting and waiting and waiting and waiting for the vampire thing so no I'm glad you brought this up because I am thinking a lot about this exact thing in terms of trap and also which the trailer that you spoiled for all of us was released and watched it and ruled anyway and I was thinking a little bit about it in terms of your kind of prompt for the second part of this podcast like what do we want from summer movies which is you want to know something but you don't want to know everything and then I was actually wondering whether trap was written with having this reveal be part of the hook that you come and see the movie or whether you find out they had to do it for marketing I think this is a crisis of movie marketers right now and consequently movie audiences because it's so hard to get people into theaters that really have to be sold that something's going to be new different in an event and sometimes you have to give up your idea to get them in I mean I thought about this in the Speaking of Evil trailer too where I was like why would you give away big turns in the movie but also maybe people won't show up with just the ominous suggestion of something going awry with trap you and I would show up to Josh Hartnett is the goofy guy taking his daughter to a Dua Lipa concert and then everyone's going to get abducted and then we would lose our fucking minds but I'm curious when the reveal comes in the movie does it come 20 minutes in does it come an hour in I guess we'll see we'll find out I think that's the trick of that movie if what we saw in that trailer that I described to you is the first 20 minutes of the movie that's exciting because he got you the setup but then it becomes the M.I. Shyamalan proposition of can they actually take you somewhere else or then are you just watching like an hour of Josh Hartnett like trying to get out of a stadium I'm very forgiving of the M.I. Shyamalan high stakes premise that doesn't necessarily land at the end like if 80% of your movie is thrilling I don't get mad when it doesn't work for me but a lot of people do totally but if the reveal comes in 20 minutes then you've got 80% of the movie left and it's like how you know that's a harder balance so we'll see I don't know I'm excited about it I put it on my list I'm excited too before we get into our list in our summer conversation the only other movie news is that Steven Spielberg is making another movie he's making another UFO movie this is an original idea from him apparently David Katz can write the screenplay I mean sure yes yeah he's good at it he's the part of the sky you know you return to the things that you love you know so parents and aliens that's what he's exploring that's what he's dealing with have you revisited West Side Story or the Fablemans I haven't and I don't know why I haven't because I really liked West Side Story I absolutely loved West Side Story I should re-watch it before we do Challengers so I was thinking about this recently after I saw Challengers because I went back and looked at you know I keep my spreadsheets as you know and I don't put all my star ratings into Letterboxd right away because there's some barcos or I don't like to give away what we're going to talk about on the show but I always had an instant reaction that I put into the spreadsheet as soon as I get home so you wait until you get home you're not doing it on your phone no no but after I've seen a movie I come home the app is not really useful I don't really like full sheets yeah but I mean you've got thousands of movies I do I do well I do I break it down by years so it's just hundreds I'm kind of navigating but if I've seen a movie a long time ago so I went back and looked at what I gave Challengers and then I looked at what other movies I gave that rating to over the years on my snap reaction and I gave the same rating Challengers that I gave to the Faiblemans and I gave the same rating to the West Side Story and then I think I reached all those movies and maybe I lowered them in my estimation just a little bit but now I'm like if I came out of Faiblemans and I was like that was great we saw Faiblemans together and we both really liked it I was thinking about this because I'm like I still got it I know he still got it I really really liked Faiblemans and I really really liked West Side Story I don't know if they're masterpieces but maybe they are and I want to revisit them so him being like I'm going to do a UFO movie this is one of the key concepts of my work is what's beyond our life and what's in the sky and what provides wonder for us all that obvious stuff the fact that he's still working through that stuff I love the same way Scorsese still working through organized crime and Catholicism I still love and I feel the same way about Quentin Tarantino you're right that he should be allowed to do whatever he wants he's going to do whatever he wants but I want to continue to see him work his way through the ideas of his film and we talked about this one time Hollywood came out that was an evolution for him there was a sense of emotionality to that movie that felt developed that felt beyond some of what he had done before or at least different from what he had done before and I don't really want to give it up like I don't want to give up what could be and so I think when people are whinging about don't make more than 10 it's because of that it's because even if it's not as good as Goodfellas The Irishman is worthwhile The Irishman's a masterpiece I love it I don't love it as much as Goodfellas I know I mean it's a great film Warren Scorsese can have multiple masterpieces I completely agree so you will see the UFO movie you like War of the Worlds I haven't seen it in a long time it rips that's Tom and Dakota and Crazy Tim Robbins yeah Dakota Fanning and Kirsten Dunst are both on the press right now so they both once again are chatting out the anecdote of I worked with Tom Cruise once when I was like 11 and he sends me gifts every year still is that cool or not cool well he's got a spreadsheet or an assistant has a spreadsheet you know and it's like we all know that but that's fine but it's everybody's content I guess did you see the Criterion I sure did that's fucking awesome it's great it's just really exciting once a year Criterion is like and one for the regular people and this is one for the regular people and I'm very excited about it okay Summer Movies let's get into it last year we did the Summer Blockbuster 90s draft maybe we'll do one for the 2000s I have absolutely no memory of that what did I draft? I don't know I can tell you right now it was one of the most popular drafts we've ever done because I think people have a strong feeling about what 90s Summer Blockbuster but what did you draft?
I don't know Speed was on the board find the document I will find the document Summer Movies are a big deal this is a critical thing for us it's a shared interest of ours we're both summer birthday kids we're both thought about going to the movies children of the 90s when you're allowed to just chill out in front of the screen for eight hours at a time because there was nothing else to do yeah I was just reminiscing with CR and his wife Phoebe about how we would just go to the Arc for six hours a day when I didn't have children you can still do that but it's not the same it's not quite the same as it used to be no it's more expensive I mean we're grownups some of it is just like with like get goggles on you know like I just I want to be stunned and I don't want to think too hard but I want to be emotionally manipulated that informed my picks even on this episode Bobby did you track down what we drafted? remind us yes I did Chris got Twister There's Something I'll Marry Ghost T2 Judgment Day The Fugitive and Point Break Amanda you got Jurassic Park that's insane those are the movies he got those are the movies that he got Amanda you got Jurassic Park My Best Friend's Wedding Apollo 13 Die Hard with a Vengeance Sleep is in Seattle and The Firm and Sean you got Speed A League of Their Own Saving Private Ryan Star Wars Episode 1 The Phantom Menace Unforgiven and The Truman Show One thing that I regret not asking and I think I was just I was hungry and pissed off and just kind of like it's just we got to build in some food plans I know you don't like lunch it's fine we live we learn we'll get the entire personal system you'll get there but I didn't Rob mentioned that he had watched 40 movies like many of them for the first time and I have some concern that Rob Mahoney only saw Naughty Hill for the first time in the last three months you can't say it's not a play no you're still doing on this he's really got your number he's got your number he does and he just somehow always gets the draft order that's how I feel about Joanna Joanna Joanna's not even trying to get my numbers she's just like we have like a little bit of crossover taste wise and it keeps foiling me in these circumstances so it's tough to not get Magnolia it's a tough one you know I really I don't feel great about that anywho I think you put it on I think you put it very well which is like we want to have our kid goggles on most of the movies we have on our list I'm just like maybe this is crap but I hope not yeah but the other thing about it is that you do have some sort of expectation you know something the premise is very important and so you know like I'm gonna go in and like Will Smith's gonna find an alien or I'm gonna go in and Tom Hanks is gonna be stuck in space or I'm gonna go you know or Julia Roberts is gonna break up a wedding or Julia Roberts is gonna run away from a wedding or Julia Roberts is gonna break Hugh Grant's art 14 times but how much you know is sort of is an art and it's something they really perfected in the 90s and I think also the balance of how much do you know going in and what are you excited for versus how much are you surprised or how much how much payoff there is is like is in some ways the equation and we've been tipping the wrong way of it I think we've been tipping where we know too much and so the anticipation like Trav is a perfect movie trailer it may not matter because we have the trailer and they have me in the seat and that may have actually been where all the art went but we'll see whether it pays off but I might have already had like my big movie drill you know like on my phone this morning and that is like a little bit more the reflection of the business I have a related idea to this because you know Trav does actually remind me a little bit more of the 90s movies which is that they were concept driven that they were you know like Speed or Twister like those are movies that are about the idea of the movie there's some spectacle involved obviously but the thing that has happened and if we think of May 1st through August 30th as our eligibility window here for summer movies the thing that has happened is is that Marvel has more or less kicked off every summer since 2010 notwithstanding the two COVID years of 2020 and 2021 every like end of April first week of May there's been a big Marvel movie coming out last year's Guardians of the Galaxy 3 your favorite movie in 2023 and so like summer movie I think for a generation or two behind us has been redefined it doesn't mean that we don't get some of the movies that we hold dear to us but The Fall Guy is now in the slot that is usually occupied by Marvel now in the industry this is kind of a big deal it's kind of a fascinating test to see how big can a movie like The Fall Guy be in 2024 when usually the audiences are prepared for something that is more of an event once again Universal just absolutely riding the coattails of Barbie to massive success I don't want to say too much about The Fall Guy but I will say I fucking love Ryan Gosling yeah so is everyone else Ryan Gosling is in his I'm fucking back era and he's doing it and he's selling it and Universal is very smart to be like okay here we go and here's our big opportunity he went from the Oscars like to Austin for The Fall Guy premiere at South by Southwest and that's really my point about Trapp and The Fall Guy is that these movies are more like the 90s movies we're talking about The Fall Guy is a big splashy action romance built on its movie stars that's not a thing really do you want to come with me again to see it? you're going to go can we go to dinner before? yes we can it's at the Grove I believe so we'll have to figure out where to go oh that's right it's a little trickier food wise we'll find something sounds like it's time for some Cheesecake Factory that's one of the busiest Cheesecake Factories in America we recently tried with our families to go to the Americana Cheesecake Factory and we were turned away it is Cheesecake Factory is cooking I don't know I mean literally unfiguratively I don't know what it is that America is just locked in but every time I try to go to one I can't get in this is not fun like I don't even remember what the food tastes like it's been a decade I keep getting turned away anyway it's the serving size is the best in the bulking season I don't know how much fucking chicken and pasta on your plate I go to bar class right next to a Cheesecake Factory and I go to the bar and I leave and like 11am the doors open at 11am at Cheesecake Factory on weekday and like the entire window everyone is full seated with their Chardonnay at like 11am on Tuesday like there's some other Cheesecake Factory life that those people are living and I envy it it's because everyone in LA is unemployed everyone's just waiting to get a job and so they're like let's go to Cheesecake you know just chill for three hours 11am with the brown bread oh no sweet brown bread god damn it I mean they've also they've also got like the dessert case right by the front door and so I see it I mean I just really really need a large slice of Cheesecake or Layer Cake the husband hack is anytime you go to a screening and your wife is mad at you that you're at the screening you gotta come home with that Oreo Cheesecake from Cheesecake Factory can you tell Zach well he doesn't go to the screenings you're at the screenings you have to see it for yourself just get in I was at Abigail last night it's not the same I didn't actually last night but I usually do that can you get one for me next time you need to drive it over to your home if you presented me with a slice of Oreo Cheesecake right now I'm sorry I would start crying I'm like actually tearing up thinking about it like it actually doesn't take much I have this reputation as this like just you know hard like nothing I'm worse like there are little tears in my eyes right now just imagining and like the special whipped cream on the cheesecake I did do that too with Eileen and she was just like wow I take it all back I'm excited about that I went full moron you know I went like just absolutely let's have fun you have like one respectable movie and I had one respectable movie I had Janet Planet when she saw Telluride I liked it a lot Sarah Julia Nicholson which I'm like it's about moms and daughters but I had it on the list and the trap trailer hit this morning and I was like delete I mean I could remove I could go moron mode too I mean it's fine you can do whatever you want but it would be very easy for me to just put Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes at number five it was going to be Kind of Kindness which I think actually had a chance to be its own kind of moron mode this is Yorgos Lanthimos's anthology movie starring Emma Stone, Jesse Plemons a number of other famous people Joe Allen Joe Allen I'm excited I was playing speaking of moron mode I mean it could be it could go any number of ways the last few haven't hit for me but I've been playing Ride in the House the last couple of days getting mass acclimated I'm just like if we get like a true breakup album with some editing like fucking bring it you know I'm ready to feel alive again I'm happy for you I'm happy for you and listen I hope that Joe Allen is on a lovely island somewhere without internet reception for the next two months and then gets to promote his nice movie with his friends yeah I wish him safety that's actually what I wish I mean listen the only thing you can say is that Travis Kelce has been his off season hosting Are You Smarter Than a Celebrity and wearing a Happy Gilmore hat to Coachella which is like an amazing choice but also can you be a grown woman dating the guy within the Happy Gilmore hat he's a world champion I'm not sure if you saw if they won the Super Bowl so I would give away a finger for a sequel Sean's at the top of my rings would you date Travis Kelce is that your kind of guy no not even close yeah you're more I need a C yeah yeah I need some dashing in my life I don't want a bro-y type more of a CR you know really tall well-groomed you know suits fit well no he's not really that type kinds of kindness I think it's actually going to be a lot of fun it might actually be quite silly but I'm going to see Kingdom of the Planet next week I'm pumped I love those movies I'm probably going to re-watch all the Apes movies it's possible that it's going to be like a huge lockdown because the Reeves movies were so good but you know fucking Apes are you officially making that number five yeah because you inspired me the other thing I want to say about this list I was able to go more on mode because Challengers is not eligible it's being released one week before the May 1st deadline Challengers is fucking coming buy your tickets now get your rave clothes ready and let's fuck it or your tennis gear whichever you know because that'll be suitable and let's go uh i would expect the challenger spot to be very energetic so i look forward to recording with you guys in one week from now um it is i think it's fair to say it is one of if not the movie events of the year uh but it's not eligible so instead my number five is despicable me four i'd like to i'd like to tell a personal anecdote so last night uh my husband's traveling um our heroic babysitter izzy came over to help me pass for a while and he's being a real pill so we found ourselves on the couch watching the sound of music together max loves the sound of music and um like he's just absolutely wrapped he sits through all the talking the only thing is when the captain and maria finally get together and this is that very boring song he's like it's very dark all dark anyway that was me and abigail um so it's me and us and izzy we're sitting there and i think i was trying to um izzy's younger so i wanted to make sure she knew about the famous mix weenies article about like the baroness writing off her oh you know like because she would have been very young so i'm telling her about it during my phone and then and we're like talking over nas and then knocks suddenly out of nowhere just goes no talking and silences me and izzy in the middle of sound of music and i was like oh number one i'm raising horrible phone bro and two he's ready for the movies so despicable me four here we go at the alamo draft house apparently because nas is just ready to silence everyone wherever he goes oh oh wow yeah and um will you actually do that will he have to sit on your lap um i don't know i think that he might be overwhelmed for a second by the loudness but like the volume and the quiet you know and having this in one place but he actually really does like movies so i think i'm gonna try to go kid-friendly environment okay but as i said before real minion energy to nox despite the just absolutely austere film environments required for him to screen classics well i wonder if there's going to be uh any gentle minion energy around despicable me four i think we have to account for that too that there might be some waves of older people but that also makes for a more hectic viewing environment yeah but he thinks anyone from the age of like seven to fifteen is like the coolest person yeah i think he would be really into the despicable me four is widely assumed to be one of like the two or three highest person movies of the year i'll be honest i don't want to i don't want to rain on your brain but i'd watch a 10-minute clip of it it's in the con and i was like okay like it's just it's a despicable me movie yeah it's not i get that it's like a massive franchise do i wish that it were a minions movie instead of a despicable me movie sure i definitely think it was gonna be like the third man like what is despicable me four well i but i enjoyed uh the rise of grew okay and i didn't think it had the same vim okay that's the thing i said seriously on a podcast but i actually believe it to be true i could be wrong i don't really know i don't know what it is i'm just not really into the steve carell i mean like minions the rise of grew was like still deeply about grew it baby grew younger and that was funny yeah i enjoyed that i mean the older grew you know he's got family now we're gonna let's get a little long in the tooth okay i know it's beloved i think it's great i think it's a great idea for nox i love it yeah let's get a little close to home for you older family maybe that's your back hurts you know he's running out schemes he's not as dastardly as he thinks he is you know this is a softie now uh i will go see it alice's never seen one of these movies i'm a little nervous you don't want to introduce minions energy in her life a little bit there was a minions short at the beginning of migration which we went to go see i like migration um she really liked it yeah you two are the only people on planet earth that's what you're thinking of everything hates which the migration people are like it's fine yeah the minions short whenever she sees minions now she says those are the migration guys um which is very smart uh but i worry about having to watch movies all day long i don't know if i want that and you might you run the risk here of doing that i think they're funny it's basically like three stitches comedy but minions themselves are generally very funny and sort of on the wavelength of things that we've been showing nuts and also not his own form of humor which is running into something and falling down okay when you go to this before um i'll be taking alice to a rep screening of osu's tokyo story and i'll teach her about the value of family and intergenerational connectivity that's beautiful thank you uh my number four speaking of moron mode fool me once shame on you fool me twice shame on me fool me 11 times shame on me deadpool and wolverine uh love deadpool as you know huge fan of deadpool who's the director of deadpool 2 do you remember ryan reynolds no well yes but no it was david leech director and uh i think deadpool 2 slept on is it stupid sure of course it is most things are stupid um deadpool 3 is directed by sean levy who is the director of free guy who and you know like is in partnership with the satan version of ryan reynolds hugh jackman's wolverine i'm a fan okay many people are i'm a little concerned about having to deal with mcu retcon bs throughout this film that's that math mcfadyen is in it and it's the first mcu movie i've actually been excited for non-spiderverse division since doctor strange in the multiverse of madness it's also coming out on my birthday i was gonna say this is your birthday movie yeah do the day right do the day yeah tricky tricky situation it's the only marvel movie coming out this year i think it's better than my birthday movie your birthday movie's trap or do they move it to the ninth i think they move it to the ninth my birthday movie is rise of part two not even part one part two oh that's rough oh isn't it also isn't it also harold and the purple crayon yeah i think so let's hold on let's try a release date yeah that's great okay uh deadpool movie will you see it sure who should be the third chair on that episode i mean chris for the most fun right okay do you really want to approach it from like the church of marvel or do you want to approach it from just like no but i don't think also isn't it about because ryan reynolds and q jackman have like an enduring romance they do um we've also her jennifer garner is in this possibly right yes and reprising her role yeah and that's an interest that chris and i share jennifer garner yeah let's not pretend that i'm don't don't cut me out of narrative all right i was i was i was we have different levels to the interest but yeah yeah i thought she was uh a riveting screen presence in her marriages are you no also you're on her pretend cooking show i have no idea what that is um she regularly does little instagram videos where she's like i'm pretending to host a cooking show and she makes stuff in her kitchen and then it usually works out but there's people are so bored they're so bored but she also i think through this and through some others she loves einergarten and then i think willed a real friendship with einergarten like into life and now like einergarten was just her happy birthday and they hang out so that's one of your dreams that's one of my dreams that's nice okay i like her a lot i don't think electra's gonna be a big part of this story but she'll pop up i suspect a lot of former marvel various universe characters will pop up um that's not the reason necessarily but uh i'm willing to take the ride what's your number four i'm taking a chance on this one it's probably gonna be quite bad but what if it were good it's called fly me to the moon it stars scarlett johansson and channing tatum it is a romantic comedy set during the space race in the 60s and somehow they have to make a fake backup moon landing so we can also bring reddit into this and what if i like it what if i have a good time i would love to like it i don't know whether i will it's an apple film which you know is perhaps a directed by greg berlanti best known for his work in television probably maybe one of the most successful tv producers of the century uh do you remember the last time we saw scarlett johansson and channing tatum together in film cloud alice jupiter is one of those no no i don't hail caesar oh yeah that was great so i was thinking about hail caesar recently because david krumpholtz was on the wtf podcast and like an hour and 12 minutes into the podcast he explained he talked about his experience making that movie and working with the coen brothers and he explained the movie in the most incredible way i've ever heard i'll briefly paraphrase it which is to say he was like hollywood is 50 scumbag assholes who are always trying to get one up on you and 50 genuine artists trying to make something great and the problem is is that sometimes the genuine artists become scumbag assholes but scumbag assholes never become genuine artists and so we are in this endless game of diminishing returns and he's like that's what the movie's about and i was like this guy should be the host of the podcast that was an incredible reading of that movie that he started um anyway i really like hill caesar well i hope so i hope so i mean do i want to see a romantic comedy in the summer starting movie stars i sure do do they make them anymore no because that's the other thing is that anything else romance tinge this summer is like full romance oh yeah like sloppy like the idea of you yeah or like the calling hoover thing is starting which is like not even a train that like i'm on but um but i think like lively is gonna be in a movie you know no i you know i want some plastic i want some can you i think we should do a romance movie episode because i told you recently like that's a real it's a blind spot but it's just like i'm lacking an interest in it entirely i mean sure but i think there's a significant difference between like you know the great romances which is like jane eyre and like but like i i've only seen like one nicholas sparks movie you've seen the notebook that's the one yeah i think that's the only one i've seen others but the notebook is the only one that i write for uh we might need like an expert on this or somebody's passionate about it yeah yeah i don't know who that would be like is jody passionate about that i don't know i was gonna ask is yassi passionate about that probably not you'd like to watch what episode yassi wants to be on right no what which one uh she wants to be on the crow oh yeah that's very yassi you want to be here for that or do you want to see the crow sure it's in august it's in late august uh well you know we'll see how i'm doing okay so we'll do a status check closer to it sounds good uh okay so you've got find me on the moon my number three is alien romulus there's been all this marketing material of fede alvarez the director of alien romulus just sitting in lounger chairs with really scott talking about how sick alien is gotta say it's a good idea i'm clicking on all those videos i'm watching ridley in a very offhand way explaining how he's a genius and fede just just falling over him then fede alvarez is well known for extremely disgusting movies like evil to be evil to everything um i like his work i don't like his uh girl in the spider web movies aside from that pretty big fan yeah that was tough didn't really work out i mean also top source material only venture can really spend that into something good i tend to agree with you uh you know do we need a seventh alien movie we don't need anything do i need it i need it this is another deep august uh it is august 16th yeah i will be back from vacation at this moment will you be back from vacation yeah we need to talk about that actually um my vacation schedule is a little unorthodox this year but that's okay because we can work for it in that you're never coming back well in some ways uh but we'll make it work okay uh okay what's number three trap which i mean i just i'm psyched let's go give me your top five um i mean six cents is that number one i think so it was also probably the first you know and as we talked about in 1989 like it was okay okay um great movie signs love it very very good very underrated in my opinion i never saw the jonathan groff has to make a tough choice one oh not cabin yeah deeply upsetting yeah it seemed like it would be i would say absolutely horrendous final 10 minutes but everything else about i loved loved and that was sort of what i was alluding to when i was saying it doesn't matter if he doesn't work because groff and dave tisa are exceptional in that movie i mean i guess unbreakable i really like old i have very fond memories old was like one of the first movies back in theaters i you know it didn't pay off but i don't care i agree same i'm there for a good time dead last lady in the water yes uh okay i'm ready for to do the trap episode before i go away hopefully let us see you now i feel like i've done a lot of good promo i agree with i think these studios need us number two for me is maxine sorry this is not moron mode this is a work of art but what's nice about it is that it also can be moron mode it can this is um this is ty west third film in the mia goth slasher trilogy started by x and pearl now maxine this is a 19 late 70s early 80s set new york serial killer slash porn world crime drama it's simultaneously an homage to bx movies like vice squad and also like heat apparently and also porn as you might imagine this trailer showed before my advanced screening of civil war and the yeah the film bros were psyched i was excited too you know elizabeth debicki moses sumney my girl michelle monahan bobby cannavale lily collins palsy gene carlo esposito and kevin bacon that's a roster right there it's actually it's la it's not new york i misspoke it's la um that's important okay number two the fall guy i didn't go to vegas to see it i'm psyched give me ryan gosling grand standing every six months and i will be thrilled i watched almost every seven night live clip so did everyone in america he brings us together he's powerful he and emily blen have good chemistry at least in the the promo tour i believe that they did in the film oh good i'm glad so i like that as a pairing and as i said i like dumb stuff it does seem to watch the snl monologue i didn't actually i did see a lot of gosling saying goodbye to ken um and using uh until they back up a brink's truck full of money for it but like emily blunt shows up and she's like no like we are promoting like a new movie like you need to get your shit together say goodbye to this person and so then to say goodbye to ken he rewrites taylor swift's all too well with ken lyrics or i'm not he but the writers are saying it live he performs a version of all 12 unfortunately it was a it was a version of the 10 minute version of all too well so there's just a lot of competing emotion for me personally and i have to say like then emily comes in and she's saying about oppenheimer and it gets the extra bridges and stuff are unfocused but it was still pretty good and apparently all too well features in the movie and you won't quit until your case is heard by the supreme court you amanda dobbins v taylor swift all too well circuit all too well 10 minutes i've been playing right in the house and the original i'm just like where do you think chief justice john robertson i honestly do not care do not do not want to hear from him amanda you will be vindicated but one day the music critics will finally declare that i don't care about music critics well one day everybody will agree that all too well 10 minute version is just a snyder cut that's all it was yeah that's that's what it was and that's fine anyway this isn't the last time we'll be discussing all too well i know yeah that's what i've heard and i couldn't be more excited uh my number one is furiosa and mad max saga yeah it's very good i need to be good you have to take a lot my son was kind of riding on this one yeah uh it's not it's not the best summer slate it's not bad it actually has you know like we said the fall guy trap those kinds of movies which i dig the event tentpole movies i've seen better years horizon will be a blast but will it be good debatable i'll tell you what i'm looking forward to inside out too as well um and that's really my movie with my daughter but that's not moron mode so it doesn't really apply here um furiosa i mean it's what it is it's it's george miller returning to the mad max saga for the one two three four fifth time and you tell your joy chris hemsworth i like them the footage i saw was incredible absolutely incredible so now i went from being like okay we'll see trailer everybody's a little mixed on it now i'm like let's go this movie's coming in one month i'm here to support you thank you appreciate it i really liked uh i got a good feeling okay we'll see i mean we'll see i'm i'm also my entire summer is not riding on it as yours is so i think that i can just really be open-hearted if it's trash and i retire no because we have to solve trap you know we have to figure it out before the police do i'm not i'm i'm really like mixed on my ability to predict m night Shyamalan twists i've had some success i don't want you to try to predict it me because i don't try it when i say like i'm going full moron mode like i'm not critically thinking i'm not trying to predict it i'm just like i have no idea four months of pause of you being a moron could be tough i think that's my best work honestly fair very fair uh wait what's your number one twisters and hitman oh yeah hitman glad bowell let's fucking go i'm psyched you know one total moron mode which is the sequel to twisters where they're just sending radar bobbles up into tornadoes because the technology has not been updated we were talking about someone who knows about uh meteorology and storm chasing let me know that's still what they're doing that's still accurate yeah that's still what they're interesting so you know dorothy 15 or whatever but i'm excited for him and then you have seen hitman i couldn't go because i didn't have babysitter and that's okay because i thought the trailer looked delightful and it's glenn powell like it looks pretty goofy but in a in a funny way and yeah i'm reluctant to give away too much i will say it's a director who like in many ways brought us glenn powell he did for sure and brought us what is essential about glenn powell you know i went to screen last week and i he was there and he was talking about his journey and how obsessed he was he was telling the story and um i'm sure we'll hear it over the next couple months about how he studied screenwriting in high school and that link later scripts i want to say it was a script to dazed and confused he studied that as a teenager he's the only person in his creative writing class who was focused on screenplays um and then a little bit later he got cast with like a one-line speaking part of fast food nation which is a link later movie that i actually have not seen since it came out but it's on my list to revisit i'm probably gonna try to revisit as many later movies as i can ahead of this but um i've really really liked it um i really like it and i think it's genuinely exciting what's happening with him um and that one in particular where he's told the movie he produced it i don't want to take credit for what glenn powell is bringing to the world but like that's a shot we called in what 2017 long time ago long time ago we've been holding our stock we held held for him and i like being in his movie presence yeah the one thing that jumped out to me just seeing him talk about the movie was that he went to the tom cruise finishing school for movie stardom after top of maverick and is applying the lessons very clearly mixed results there on screen well on screen that's amazing but in terms of talking after movies you know i don't you need to repent for your dead reckoning performance that was like that was one of the most heartbreaking moments no i just you really actually hurt me that was one of the only times you actually penetrated i went to venice and like walked the path i did the stations of the cross with tom cruise for dead reckonings you can't tell me i don't care i just like don't think the ai is that cool it's not cool that's the point of the movie i'm just like i don't know and then there's gonna be like a lot of stuff i'm not asking you to reignite the wackness of our discourse about that movie i need you to get in summary with me and go to the tom cruise in movies is one of the best experiences we have tom cruise on a red carpet being like i like to go first thing in the morning to the movies i like it you know and i like to see the movies all day i think we've moved maybe add a little bit more character and personality no he is all of us he's allowing us to project our feelings onto him as a vessel i like to go on a friday i like to see two in a day you know i don't want to be like me for real for real i don't want to make a movie explaining how to turn off motion something you know i can't say i'm against it you know i think it would be funny it would be funnier if you did it like we didn't do it we should have just done it just word for word like him and mccrory did it there's still time yeah we can do it that's actually a really good psa for whenever we have a youtube feed or that could be like the lead video no you're gonna recreate a tom cruise you have to do the jumping out of the helicopter yeah if you're gonna commit commit i want to do the um going to see tenant with a mask on storming around the theater searching for the right seat being all fake excited for the movie that was a really good one he's he's he rocks at viral marketing because like half of it is completely devoid of personality and yet somehow i'm like let's do it again he did it again no that was good man come on it's good i put the wrong car sequence in like my best scenes of the year action scene all the things i listen mad respect i just whatever it's just like a screensaver just gonna eat you what's like what's the british uh talk show where movie stars come on it's like it's not the movies that made us that's a different podcast but it's like that where there's a great british host who has filmmakers and movie stars come in they talk about their favorite movies of all time obvious premise for a show but there's a tom cruise episode and he talks about it's the same thing you're talking about where he's talking about the most obvious shit of all time as though it's the first time i've ever talked about him like here's what i do but he's like singing in the rain singing in the rain changed my life when i saw it as a kid i became obsessed with it now what i do is every time i'm making an action film i make my crew watch sing in the rain i show them the blocking and the action and i say this is how i want the action to feel i mean he did actually steal the motorcycle off a clip thing from singing in the flashback gene kelly stuntman does it and knocks it very upset i'd be like he's a stuntman and then my son's like i'm too but anyway could be homage sure could be homage maybe there will be more homage another film about a stuntman nevertheless in that clip he's like rattling off names he's just like think of charlie chaplin think of he loves him i need someone to leak the email that he sent with the serial numbers of the home entertainment system if someone can get me that email with all the serial numbers i will film a video where i go and try to find all his equipment and set it up myself and i won't have any help i will just go to like best buy or whatever and be like excuse me sir do you think that we are the gold standard is a part of the viral marketing strategy yes of course did he release those tapes did he leak those maybe he did right seems likely oh my god definitely it's definitely the 99 movie draft was not a golden opportunity for you to yell at everybody and say we are the gold standard i think we achieve this is our first summer in a while without time but we have glad so i accept glad twisters and hitman is a mighty double feature that's um hitman is june on this netflix streaming service twisters is july now here's here's the thing i'm gonna tell you right now is that like for reasons outside of my control my vacation coincides with twisters and i like i you know what i'm really sorry listen shame on you there are a lot of people to blame and none of them are me i blame you so maybe they can let us see it early how about that i'll let you beg i'm gonna try really hard but like i just it's out of my hands you know it's the only time it could work i'll tell the line that you won't be there for him i will be but we're just gonna have to arrange a little you know honorable mentions okay um quiet place day one i heard that's good i mean i have liked both quiet places yeah i have too and it's like which you didn't like or you didn't see that was nicholas cage like being emo about food correct yeah i mean i think i think the quiet place movie just a gut check i think he showed a lot in that movie the only thing here is this is sort of like quiet place an origin story and lupita lupita's wonderful and lupita's not a presser of her own right now i saw her in person she's just house walking back to the hotel room was jackson anyway he was not there yeah um but the power of the other quiet place movies is you know you're just stuck in this world and you don't know how everything happened and there has been like this whole way of living and adjustment to all of it sure that's the invention but like this is a movie just like explaining how it happened it might just be an apocalyptic it's different but it doesn't even be bad it would be different john hansu reprising his role from the quiet place to joseph quinn is the second lead in this movie that's notable because he has a big part in gladiator 2 and also it's going to be one in the fantastic four he's johnny storm in the fantastic four so this is a person that who is johnny storm he's the human torch who are the other people there's one guy's the thing there's mr fantastic there's the invisible woman and there's the thing you know who's playing the thing i have in my background that's very exciting do you know who's playing mr fantastic yes but i forgot oh that's right you know who's playing the invisible woman yes that's a great cast a little dubious about the movie that's fine i'm just happy for joseph quinn i don't have an opinion on but i'm looking forward to seeing what he's up to uh other honorable mentions from you don't even mention sure well janet planet i'm sorry it was pretty disrespectful um well there's a weird part of my brain is excited for janet planet and the bike riders right so there's a funny thing happening on june 21st this year which is that there are not a ton of like big splashy releases but there are five indie films they're all interesting to exciting there's the bike riders which i saw tell you i really really liked jeff nichols's movie which was previously with fox and then moved to focus they gave the movie up so now it's opening this summer kinds of kindness which is searchlight fancy dance which is a new movie starring lily gladstone is apple janet planet which is 824 and felma which was a hit at sundance which is magnolia i've seen one two three four four of the five liked all four that's weird that on that day and this is the day before this is the week before quite this part day one and horizon this is also like before fourth of july right correct june 28th is that weekend and daddy-o looks bad um the july 4th movie is despicable me 4 oh right that's the big july 4th weekend but that june 21st is kind of a weird one kind of interesting i don't know how we get people excited about seeing all those movies but we should have like a review the people who listen this far in the podcast will probably be seeing those out before despicable me 4 you're probably right uh what if nack's and i host a screening of despicable me 4 i think universally welcome it i think you should ask them if that's something they're interested in uh well you won't show him any other despicable me content ahead of time no he's like he doesn't i was very nervous i guess he knew do re mi the song before we sat down about time you know it's raining all weekend and that song comes an hour into the movie and i was like well let's just try it let's just sit him down we'll start at the beginning we'll see when he starts protesting just sat all the way through interesting when we start listening to win biscuit can i tell you one of the things under the radar that i'm excited about well two things actually there's two documentaries coming to disney plus this summer yeah the beach boys are you and i are both very excited about it the beach boys documentary like i'm pretty pumped like i don't think it's gonna be get back or anything i don't think it's gonna be as great as that but i mean the beach boys another like kind of meeting point for us you know less than like every single other you know but yes may 24th this film is coming uh the other one i think a week later is a jim henson documentary that i've already seen called idea man that i've loved directed by ron howard now i'm a big fucking jim henson dork so it's easy to get me on that one but what an interesting life i mean just a fascinating life very strange fellow just the world creates the inside i highly recommend that movie uh other honorable mentions for you no i think that's all of them will you be seeing long legs i don't know what that is and i meant to google it but it's a very disturbing nicholas cage horror movie that's some great marketing probably not unless you want me to see it oh is it out too sure i cried and said out one you know yeah we haven't shown it to alice yet we just started the pixar journey for real for real what'd you start with she'd already seen fun you know toy story a while ago we just hit up oh it hit it hit it did did she cry no but she gets like very intense at the end of these movies where she gets like locked in and like you can't say anything to her okay she won't interact with you at all um which you know can relate uh so i don't we're gonna go on a journey right too he's probably on the list gotta go through some toy story movies not sure what else we'll do it's like too early for incredibles and cars and stuff like that oh because they're scary yeah there's more tense okay but um i'm excited for inside out too as well sing sing also with colin domingo which is more is not more on mode at all but looking forward to that i think that's the watchers and it's daughter's film i'm happy for them i believe in daughters of great filmmakers so you certainly do also becoming great filmmakers can you name more than one um is bryce dallas howard made a movie i mean francesca scorsese on piktok sure that's a good one oh yeah but that is her own medium also speaking of piktok romey mars granddaughter of and daughter of who's romey is sophia's daughter with the oh i make the pasta because i got suspended that was incredible i mean that was that was true art you think it's gonna be a good summer we can make it a good summer let's have fun you're just bailing on me on like july 13th no i'm coming back but then i'm gonna be gone well we'll make it work you know you heard my feelings this kind of reminds me of the dead wrecking episode the force is out of my control and i tried to control that and it didn't work out but you know the one thing is like this summer is not like last summer where there is like a very obvious central movie weekend that we literally are planning our summers on as we did last year my in-laws are like how did you know that barney and oppenheimer would be like such an event that you actually planned our vacation around it and i was like well i'm not a genius i just this is what i do for a living but there isn't really a center in that way you're 100 right and the year before that was top god maverick which was like a different kind of center i think i think part of it is that the center there are centers they're just not in our core just like before and deadpool and wolverine are gonna be fucking big those are gonna be really popular movies those are on our list they are on our list but in a very tongue-in-cheek way like not in a i can't wait for corbenheimer kind of yeah so yeah we got spoiled two summers you lose some that's why you gotta enjoy it when it comes to you and then make the best of whatever at this time next year we'll be previewing paul thomas anderson's summer film yeah so that's great on imax on imax why not what else i like summer you know i'm in a better mood so and i just i haven't stopped thinking about the words i feel like i have to bring one to work that's gonna it's gonna slow me down getting here for the recording time and it's gonna be an issue i don't know i mean i eat old food so you can like buy it and then put it now i'm a parent i can't not in addition to not saying like no talking um i realized that he doesn't really like old food either and he is like but really responds to real food and i was like shit i'm raising tiny sean like that is really talk about karma you know well that would be wonderful obviously we've discussed this when nox and i are locked in on like david kronenberg's 38th film but i did put the mess on for him because i wasn't able to turn on doctors i'm glad you started crying thanks for because the mess are back the mess are so back and we waited for the end of the pods i gotta tell you the inning that we watched was not confident firing p alonso bottom of the seven like had a real chance and just whiffed and then i think i told zach i was like uncle sean called that man gutless no no no no no no i did not i said that some people might say i was like can you say gutless no did i say that bobby no i i didn't and i wouldn't i love pete i'm on the record about pete i love pete i hope pete is a metro life but i gotta say that there's some david stern's voodoo magic going on right now man bobby you've been a doubter whatever's still a doubter all the dudes that he signed to i was like who is that has been kicking ass so some stuff's happening is it all fake is it all april nonsense probably yeah it's early i get it but we were so down bad no i know and and this is the sport that you get to be on the emotional roller coaster with and i i accept it and even to some degree support it um there's so many games it's so hard it's like you can't get off the train well are you gonna do this for the mix because i don't really think i can buy that not on the pod because i don't think that's on the talk about okay but i mean of course i mean it's a very complicated time yeah all of my dearest friends are from philadelphia city i thought you quit the mix no no i did in 2013 it's a bit okay okay that's fine i can only really i can support you with the mets i probably watch i don't know what to say about the jets my guy um i don't know what to say i mean it could go terribly awry your quarterback is gonna be running for president he's not he's not he's been revealed he's gonna be arrested by the woke mob I think, yeah, Sheriff Bobby Wagner will be coming through to put the cuffs on him.
I mean, you know, he just said some stuff about Fauci yesterday. I'm like, shut the fuck up. Stop talking. Like, just go play football.
Like, I honestly don't know what's going on with this. Every time he says the word remdesivir, he should be shocked with several voltages. I also thought the NFL, like, had some sort of protections in place. Like, aren't they famously uptight and punitive?
Yeah. But only to black players? Only in the other direction, not in the direction that he's moving in. I will not and cannot defend Aaron Rodgers' public statements, period.
Like, I have no idea what the hell he's talking about. I hope he can play 17 games and take the Jets to the playoffs. I freaking need it to happen. I need it to happen.
You're a wonder. Thank you. Thank you. And I really enjoy interrogating the psychological corner of your brain.
Something's going to happen where one of the teams is going to win. Like, it's going to happen in the next 20 years. In the next 20 years? I've been waiting.
The teams that I root for, it has been 38 years since one of them won a title. Have you ever thought that maybe you're the problem? No, because it happened when I was alive. It happened when I was alive.
I was just saying. Right? So it can't be me. Was there some demon born on, like, October 8th, 1986?
Was there some Rosemary's Baby? Isn't that like the actual... Well, no, that was good for the Mets and bad for the Sox, right? Correct.
That was the last championship for a Mets-Jets-Nicks team. I love sports. You have time for tennis season? I have...
I see the floor to the tennis expert. You are the tennis expert. I like tennis. That's me dancing the standstorm in my head because they haven't released the score yet.
I know, I'm waiting. I don't know about this boys' noise remix. Yeah, no, no, no. I'm just making my own soundtrack.
You're referring to challengers. Sports are wonderful. It could go either way. What a great episode.
Bobby, thank you for your work on this episode. That's Bobby Wagner. He's our producer. My pleasure.
I will be back next week to speak with Chris Ryan. Should I see Imaginarian coming to get my report? I would welcome that. I believe it's available for rent.
Oh, then I can definitely see it. So, yes, you're welcome. We'll be recording at 10.30. I can workshop my Roomba takes.
If you'd like. I don't think there's a single Roomba in the film Imaginarian, so I don't know where you're getting that from. It was just a bear sliding across the floor. Do you think that they used a Roomba to do that and then edit the Roomba out?
I don't. I don't, no. You could literally just put a stuffed animal on a string and pull it. Alrighty.
Have you seen Late Night with the Devil? No. Do you know who that is? No.
Do you know who David Destin-Malchin is? No. This has been The Ringers Movie Podcast, The Big Picture. We shall return next week to talk about more movies.
