The 3 Fictions -A description of the fictitious state of the World

from The Economic Fiction Podcast · host Flemming Blicher

The Democratic, Legal and Economic FictionsBy 2022, I had lived through three years marked by the Covid-19 pandemic, constitutional violations and yet another never-ending war beginning in Ukraine. I had given what I could to my community through activism, raising awareness on social media and even by forming different political parties. My campaign hadn’t yielded much of a result, so I decided to document it all in a book. It turned into a total of four books, with ‘The 3 Fictions’ being the crowning achievement. The 3 Fictions was founded in my examination of the real (rotten) state of Denmark. Hence the name of my first book “The Danish Illusion”.In attempting to answer the question of ‘what the real state of Denmark’ was, I stumbled across some interesting facts: The Danes had a highly biased, or even wrong, impression of their own role in the World. As I examined the situation more closely, it struck me that, broadly speaking, there were three main narratives:The Democratic FictionThe Legal FictionThe Economic FictionThe Swedish FictionHaving learnt from the coronavirus pandemic, I was painfully aware from the outset that Denmark was no exception when it came to the population living under an illusion about their own society. So when Betina and Håkan visited me in Denmark and invited me to present my work for a Swedish audience, it was the opportunity I’d been waiting for: to explain how “The Illusion of Denmark” is also “The Illusion of Sweden”.The same “3 Fictions” apply to the vast majority of (particularly Western) countries. The Danish democratic fiction is not significantly different from the Swedish one. Does Sweden have free and independent news media? Can a media outlet be independent when it receives state funding that can be withdrawn if it fails to report ‘the right news’? I would say no.And, not surprisingly to me, the picture of Sweden mirrored that which I had found in my investigations into the true state of Denmark.I would say that this is probably also the case in whatever country you live in.In this presentation, I will address all three areas—democracy, law and economics—in order to examine the underlying (3) fictions. The Danish Illusion is a reader supported Substack newsletter.
