Why is US President Donald Trump so obsessed with the idea of Canada becoming “the 51st state”? The American president is being manipulated by billionaires to exploit Canada’s natural resources, of course. Frankly, I don’t think Donald is smart enough to have an endgame in mind, but he is surrounded by rich industry bros with brains and private interests. As Donald Trump continues to table legislation undermining American democracy, with the notion of nearing midterm elections becoming more of a question mark than a given, Canada must remain strong, cautious and critical of our trade dealings with the United States. The G7 meeting in Alberta approaches, and Trump’s tariffs, as well as talks of natural resource development and trade, are sure to be on the docket.
