Most succession plans are built around roles. Who fills what position. What the org chart looks like after the transition. How responsibilities get redistributed. Very few are built around what my mentor gave me: the transfer of values, judgment, relationships, and the invisible knowledge that makes a leader genuinely effective rather than just technically present. And so the 90 days after a leadership transition — the window that determines whether a handover succeeds or quietly fails — becomes a scramble to cover the role rather than a deliberate continuation of what the departing leader actually built.
